Circuivit terram et perambulavit, quia per corda gentium iniquitatis suae vestigia impressit. Ca- dens enim a sublimibus 55 humanas mentes jure, possedit, quia in culpae suae vinculo volentes astrin- xit; tantoque latius iu mundo vagatus est, quanto a reatu quisque illius liber per omnia inventus non est. Cui quasi ex potestate mundum circuisse est, nullum hominem qui sibi plene resisteret invenisse.

The devil went about the earth, because he encompassed and possessed all men. — For from Adam, before the Lord's coming, he drew after himself all the nations of the peoples. He went about the earth and walked through it, because through the hearts of the nations he impressed the footprints of his iniquity. For falling from the heights, he possessed human minds by right, because he bound them willingly in the chain of his own fault; and he roamed the more widely in the world, the more that no one was found wholly free from his guilt. To have gone about the world as though by right was, for him, to have found no man who fully resisted him.

Sed jam Satan redeat, id est, ab effectu suae malitiae vis illum divina constringat, quia jam apparuit in carne qui e in peccati contagione ex carnis nihil habebat infirmi- tate. Venit hu(??)is, quem et superbus hostis admi- retur; quatenus qui fortia divinitatis ejus despexerat, etiam humanitatis ejus infirma pertimescat. Unde et mox significatione mirifica, contra eum ipsa huma- nitatis infirmitas obstupescenda proponitur, ut di- catur:
But now let Satan return, that is, let the divine power constrain him from the effect of his malice, because now He has appeared in the flesh who had nothing infirm from the flesh in the contagion of sin. There came a lowly one, whom even the proud enemy might marvel at; so that he who had despised the strong things of His divinity might also dread the weak things of His humanity. Whence also at once, by a wondrous signification, that very weakness of humanity is set before him as a thing to be astonished at, so that it may be said:
