56. Ferientis manum sola emendatione evadimus.Ille etenim de manu fugit ferientis, qui suae pravitatern corrigit actionis. Vel certe nua in sacro eloquio manus operatio solet intelligi, de manu percussi fugit qui, dum pravi interitum conspicit, vias pravitatis reliuquil. Unde adhuc subditur: 37. In aliorum pœna quid nobis timendum sit conspicimus. — Manus quippe siringere est vitæ suæ opera in rectitudine confirmare. Unde etiam Paulus ait: Remissas monus et dissoluta genua erigite (Ilebr. XII, ł2). Dum itaque alienum interitum conspiciunt, revocantur ad cor, ut recogitent suum; et unde alius ad tormenta ducitur, a tormento alius inde liberatur.
56. We escape the hand of the smiter by amendment alone. For he flees from the hand of the smiter who corrects the perversity of his own action. Or indeed, since in Sacred Scripture the hand is wont to signify action, he flees from the hand of the one smitten who, while he beholds the ruin of the wicked man, forsakes the ways of perversity. Whence there is further added: 37. In another's punishment we behold what we ourselves must fear. — For to clasp the hand is to establish the works of one's life in uprightness. Whence also Paul says: 'Lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees' (Hebrews XII, 12). Therefore, while they behold another's ruin, they are called back to their heart, that they may reconsider their own; and whence one is led to torments, from that same source another is delivered from torment.
五十六、我們唯藉悔改脫離擊打者的手。因為凡改正自己行為之邪僻的人，就從擊打者的手中逃脫了。或者說，既然聖經中「手」常表示行為，那麼凡看見惡人滅亡便離棄邪僻道路的人，就從那受擊打者的手中逃脫了。故此又補充說：三十七、在別人的刑罰中，我們看見自己當懼怕的事。——因為握緊手，就是將自己生命的作為堅立於正直中。所以保羅也說：「把下垂的手與發酸的腿挺起來」（希伯來書十二章12節）。因此，當他們看見別人的滅亡時，便回到自己心中省察己身；如此，一人由之被引往痛苦的緣由，另一人卻由之脫離了痛苦。

Stringit ergo super eum manus suas, quia conspicit in aliena poena quid timeat; et dum delinquentem sic percussum conspicit, dissoluta sua opera justitiæ vigore constringit. Sicque fit nt qi.i iniquus vivens multos ad culpam traxerat delectatione peccati, quosdam moriens a culpa revocet terrore tormenti. Quod etiam provenire bonis Psalmisla testatur, dicens: Lætabitur justus cum viderit vindictam impiorum, manus suas lavabit in sanguine peccatorum (Psal. LVII, 11). In peccatorum morientium sanguine justi lavantur manus, quia dum eorum poena conspicitur, conspicientis vita mundatur. Sequitur.
Therefore he clasps his hands over him, because he beholds in another's punishment what he himself should fear; and while he beholds the offender thus smitten, he binds fast his own dissolute works with the vigour of righteousness. And so it comes to pass that he who while living wickedly had drawn many to fault by the delight of sin, while dying may recall some from fault by the terror of torment. That this also comes to pass for the good, the Psalmist testifies, saying: 'The just shall rejoice when he shall see the vengeance; he shall wash his hands in the blood of the sinner' (Psalm LVII, 11). The just wash their hands in the blood of dying sinners, because while their punishment is beheld, the life of the beholder is cleansed. There follows:
