8. Peccatoribus adulari quam noxium.— Ab innoceniia quippe recederet, si bona de malis aestimaret, Salomone attestante, qui ait: Qui justificat impium, et qui condemnat justum, uterque abominabilis eat ante Deum (Prov. xvn, ł5). Sunt namque nonnulli (Dist. XLVI, c. 2) qui dum male facta hominum laudibus efferunt, augent quæ increpare debuerunt. Hinc enim per prophetam dicitur: Vcc qui consuunt putrillos sub omni cubito manus, et faciunt cervicalia sub capite universæætatis (Ezech. xm, 18). Ad hoc quippe pulvillus 560 ponitur, ut mollius quiescatur.
8. How harmful it is to flatter sinners. For he would depart from innocence if he esteemed good things of the wicked, as Solomon attests, who says: «He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, both are abominable before God» (Prov. 17:15). For there are some who, while they extol men's evil deeds with praises, increase what they ought to have rebuked. Hence it is said through the prophet: «Woe to them that sew cushions under every elbow, and make pillows under the head of persons of every age» (Ezek. 13:18). For a cushion is placed for this purpose, that one may rest more softly.

Quisquis ergo male agentibus adulatur, pulvillum sub capiie, vel cubito jacentis ponit, ut qui corripi ex culpa debuerat, in ca fultus laudibus molliter quiescat. Hinc rursum scriptum est: Ipse ædificabat parietem, illi au-, tem liniebant eum (Ibid. XIII, 10). Parietis quippe nomine peccati duritia designatur. Ædificare ergo parietem est contra se quempiam obstacula peccati construere. Sed parietem liniunt, qui peccata perpetrantibus adulantur, ut quod illi perverse agentes acdificaat, ipsi adulantes quasi nitidum reddant. Sed sanctus vic sicut mala de bonis non æstimat, iti judicare bona de malis recusat, dicens:
Whosoever, therefore, flatters those who act wickedly, places a cushion under the head or elbow of one lying down, so that he who ought to have been corrected for his fault, propped up by praises, may rest softly therein. Hence again it is written: «He built a wall, but they daubed it» (ibid. 13:10). For by the name of a wall is designated the hardness of sin. To build a wall, therefore, is for someone to construct against himself the obstacles of sin. But they daub the wall who flatter those committing sins, so that what those perversely acting build up, they, by flattering, may render as it were smooth and gleaming. But the holy man, just as he does not esteem evil of the good, so he refuses to judge good of the evil, saying:

Absit a me ut justos vos judicem donec deficiam, non recedam ab innocentia mea. Ubi aperte subjunxit: Coeptam namque justificationem desereret, si in peccantium laudem declinaret. Sed quia tunc verius a peccatis alienis absistimus, cum prius nos a propriis custodimus, cur de eis peccare pertimescat, rationis causas insinuat, cum subjungit:
«Far be it from me that I should judge you righteous; till I die, I will not depart from my innocence.» Here he plainly subjoined: for he would forsake the justification he had begun, if he declined into praise of sinners. But since we then more truly abstain from others' sins, when we first keep ourselves from our own, he suggests the reasons why he dreads to sin on their account, when he subjoins:
