I bid. — Propterea non exaltabuntur. 430 37. Disciplinae expertes ab infimis ad coelestia nunquam sublevantur. — Cor enim si sub disciplina esset, superiora appeteret, adipiscendis bonis trans- euntibus non inhiaret. Quorum igitur cor sub disci- plina non est, recte de illis dicitur: Propterea non exaltabuntur, quia dum in infimis voluptatibus di- missi terrena bona semper desiderant, cor ad su- perna gaudia nunquam levant. Exaltarentur quippe si mentem ad spem patriae coelestis erigerent. Sed a qui per disciplinam custodire vitam minime student, semper per desideria in imis jacent, et, quod est gra- vius, jacendo se erigunt, quia de rebus transitoriis extolluntur.
Ibid.—'Therefore they shall not be exalted.' 37. Those without discipline are never raised from the lowest things to heavenly ones.—For if the heart were under discipline, it would seek the things above, it would not gape after the transitory goods to be acquired. Of those, therefore, whose heart is not under discipline, it is rightly said: 'Therefore they shall not be exalted,' because, while, abandoned amid the lowest pleasures, they ever desire earthly goods, they never lift up their heart to the joys above. For they would indeed be exalted if they raised their mind to the hope of the heavenly homeland. But those who by no means strive to guard their life through discipline ever lie amid the lowest things through their desires; and, what is graver, in lying down they raise themselves up, because they are lifted up over transitory things.
同上——「因此他們不得高升。」三十七、那些沒有管教的人，永不從最卑下的事物被提升到屬天的事物。——因為心若在管教之下，就必尋求上面的事，不會渴慕要掙取的短暫之物。所以論到那些心不在管教之下的人，恰當地說：「因此他們不得高升」，因為他們既被撇棄於最卑下的宴樂中而恆常貪戀地上的財物，就永不把心提升到上面的喜樂。他們若把心思提升到屬天家鄉的盼望，確實就必被高升。但那些絕不藉管教努力看守自己生命的人，總因私慾躺臥在最卑下的事物中；更嚴重的是，他們在躺臥中卻自高，因為他們因短暫之物而自誇。

Extolli autem possunt, sed exaltari ne- queunt, quia inde profundius in imo sunt, unde apud se altiores fiunt. Cor itaque, quod sine disciplina est, exaltari non valet, quia humana mens sicut male ele- vata in infimis premitur, sic bene pressa in sublimibus levatur. Sequitur:
But they can be lifted up, yet cannot be exalted, because they are the more deeply in the lowest place from that very thing wherein they become higher in their own esteem. And so the heart which is without discipline cannot be exalted, because the human mind, just as when evilly lifted up it is pressed down among the lowest things, so when well pressed down it is raised into the sublime. There follows:
