V ers. 8.— Nec aspiciet me visus hominis. 30. Tunc Christi gratia non liberat, quem nunc non reformat.—Visus quippe hominis est misericordia Redemptoris, quae insensibilitatis nostrae duritiam, cum respicit, emollit. Unde, teste quoque Evangelio, dicitur: Respexit Dominus Petrum, et recordatus est Petrus verbi quod dixerat Jesus; egressus foras, flevit amare ( Luc. xxii, 61). Exutam vero carne animam nequaquam jam visus hominis aspicit, quia post mor- tem non liberat, quem ante mortem gratia ad ve- niam non reformat. Hinc etenim Paulus dicit: Ecce nunc tempus acceptabile, ecce nunc dies salutis ( II Cor. vi, 2). Hinc Psalmista ait: Quoniam in sae- culum misericordia ejus ( Psal. cxvii, 1).

Verse 8: 'Nor shall the sight of man behold me' (Job 7:8). 30. The grace of Christ does not then set free him whom it does not now reform. — For the sight of man is the mercy of the Redeemer, which, when it looks upon us, softens the hardness of our insensibility. Whence, as the Gospel also testifies, it is said: 'The Lord looked upon Peter, and Peter remembered the word which Jesus had spoken; and going out, he wept bitterly' (Luke 22:61). But the sight of man no longer beholds the soul once stripped of the flesh, because after death grace does not set free him whom before death it does not reform unto pardon. Hence indeed Paul says: 'Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation' (2 Cor. 6:2). Hence the Psalmist says: 'For his mercy endures forever' (Ps. 117:1).

Quia nimirum quem nequaquam modo misericordia eripit, sola post praesens saeculum justitia addicit. Hinc Salomon ait: Quia lignum in quocunque loco ceciderit, sive ad Au- strum, sive ad Aquilonem, ibi erit ( Eccle. xi, 3), quia cum humani casus tempore, sive sanctus, sive mali- gnus spiritus egredientem animam claustra carnis ac- ceperit, in aeternum secum sine ulla permutatione retinebit, ut nec exaltata ad supplicium proruat, nec mersa aeternis suppliciis, ultra ad remedium ereptio- nis ascendat.

For indeed, him whom mercy in no way now snatches away, justice alone condemns after the present age. Hence Solomon says: 'For in whatever place the tree falls, whether to the south or to the north, there shall it be' (Eccles. 11:3); because when, at the time of man's departure, either a holy or a malign spirit has received the soul going forth from the enclosures of the flesh, it will retain it with itself forever without any change: so that neither, if exalted, does it rush down to punishment, nor, if plunged into eternal torments, does it ascend any further to the remedy of deliverance.

Vir igitur sanctus, humani generis damna considerans, quod a praesenti saeculo sine Redemptoris a cognitione subtrahitur, atque in aeter- nis ignibus irreparabiliter sepelitur, et ejus -vocem in se suscipiens, dicat: Nec aspiciet me visus homi- nis, quia 256 nimirum Redemptoris gratia, quem nunc b non intuetur ut corrigat, tunc non respicit ut ab interitu abscondat. In judicium quippe Do- minus veniens, peccatorem videt ut feriat, sed non videt ut ad largiendam salutis gratiam recognoscat; culpas examinat, et vitam pereuntium ignorat. Unde sanctus vir, cum se post praesentem vitam, respectu hominis videri non posse fateretur, apte mox sub- didit:

The holy man, therefore, considering the losses of the human race — that it is withdrawn from the present age without knowledge of the Redeemer, and is irreparably buried in eternal fires — and taking up its voice within himself, says: 'Nor shall the sight of man behold me,' because indeed the grace of the Redeemer, whom now it does not behold so as to be corrected, then does not look upon so as to hide it from destruction. For the Lord, coming to judgment, sees the sinner so as to strike, but does not see him so as to recognize him for the bestowing of the grace of salvation; he examines faults, and takes no notice of the life of the perishing. Whence the holy man, when he had confessed that after the present life he could not be seen with regard to man, fittingly subjoined at once:
