33. In ejus fortitudine quam Deus fiduciam habue rit. — In rhinocerotis hujus fortitudine fiduciam Deus habuit, quia quanto illum crudelius sibi dura inferentem pertulit, tanto pro se constantius tolerantem adversa praescivit. Cui labores etiam quos ipse in carne pertulerat dereliquit, quia conversum illum usque ad imitationem propriae passionis traxit. Unde et per eumdem rhinocerotem dicitur: Suppleo ea quæ desunt passionum Christi in carne mea (Co- loM. i, 24). De quo adhuc subditur:
33. What confidence God has placed in his strength. In the strength of this rhinoceros God placed His confidence, because the more cruelly He endured him inflicting harsh things upon Himself, the more constantly He foreknew that he would bear adversities for His sake. To him He also bequeathed the very labors which He Himself had endured in the flesh, because He drew him, once converted, even to the imitation of His own Passion. Whence also through this same rhinoceros it is said: I fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ in my flesh (Col. 1:24). Concerning whom it is further added:
