I bid. — Erat vir ille magnus inter omnes Orien- tales. 26. Christus humanitate caeteris similis, divinitate singularis. — Quod Redemptor noster Oriens dicitur, propheta 26 testante perhibetur, qui ait: Et ecce vir Oriens nomen ejus ( Zach. vi, 12). Omnes ergo, qui in hoc Oriente fide consistunt, recte Orientales vocantur. Sed quia omnes homines tantummodo ho- mines sunt, ipse autem Oriens Deus et homo, recte dicitur, Erat magnus inter omnes Orientales. Ac si aperte diceretur: Omnes, qui in fide Deo nascuntur, superat; quia non ut caeteros adoptio, sed natura illum divinitatis exaltat, qui etsi humanitate caeteris apparuit similis divinitate tamen mansit super om- nia singularis.
The same. — 'That man was great among all the men of the East.' 26. Christ, in His humanity like the rest, in His divinity singular. — That our Redeemer is called the East (Orient), the prophet is cited as bearing witness, who says: 'Behold the Man, the East (Orient) is His name' (Zech. vi, 12). All therefore who stand fast in this East by faith are rightly called men of the East (Orientals). But because all men are only men, while He, the East Himself, is God and man, rightly is it said, 'He was great among all the men of the East.' As if it were plainly said: He surpasses all who are born to God in faith; because not adoption, as the rest, but the nature of divinity exalts Him, who, although in His humanity He appeared like the rest, yet in His divinity remained above all things singular.
