46. Portæ Levlatha. pseudoprædicatores appellantur. H as Dominus aperit, magistros errorum manifeBlando. — PorI;.. vultus ejus sunt iniqui doctores, qui idcirco portæ vultus ejus vocati sunt, quia per ipsos quisque ingreditur, ut Levialhan iste quasi in potestatis suae principatu videatur. Sicut enim Scriptura sacra sanctos viros portas Sion vocare consuevit (Sion quippe speculatio inlerpretatur, et non imm!rito prædicatores sanctos portas Sion dicimus, quia per eorum vitam atque doctrinam abscondita supern;e contemplationis intramus), ita etiam portis Leviathan istius errorum magistri signaJltur, quorum dum praedicatio perversa recipitur, miseris auditoribus via perditionis aperitur.

46. The gates of Leviathan are called false preachers. These the Lord opens, by making manifest the masters of errors. — The gates of his countenance are the wicked teachers, who are therefore called the gates of his countenance because through them each one enters, so that this Leviathan may be seen as it were in the principality of his power. For just as sacred Scripture is accustomed to call holy men the gates of Zion (for Zion is interpreted 'watchtower,' and not undeservedly do we call holy preachers the gates of Zion, because through their life and doctrine we enter into the hidden things of heavenly contemplation), so also by the gates of this Leviathan are signified the masters of errors, by whose perverse preaching, when it is received, the way of perdition is opened to their wretched hearers.

Sed portae istae ante oculos hominum plerumque ad introducendum quidem apertae sunt, sed tamen ad deprehendendum clausæ, quia recta in specie exhibent, sed opere prava persuadeut. Ad deprehendendum ergo clausae sunt, quia ne intrinsecus cognosci valeant, exteriori simulatione muniuntur. Quas tamen mira potentia Dominus aperit, quia electis suis hypocritarum mentes comprehensibiles facit. Portas ergo vultus ejus quis a aperiet ? Subaudis nisi ego, qui electis meis magistros errorum sub specie sanctitatis absconditos 1104perspicua cognitione manifesto.

But these gates, before the eyes of men, are for the most part open indeed for entering, yet closed for detecting, because they present what is right in appearance, but persuade what is depraved in deed. They are closed for detecting, therefore, because, that they may not be inwardly recognized, they are fortified by an outward dissimulation. Which gates nevertheless the Lord opens by wondrous power, because to His elect He makes the minds of hypocrites comprehensible. Who therefore shall open the gates of his countenance? Understand: none but I, who make manifest by clear knowledge to My elect the masters of errors hidden under the appearance of holiness.

Et quia Antichristus veniens ipsas etiam summas hujus sæculi potestates obtinebit, qui duplici errore saeviens conatur ad se corda hominum et missis praedicatoribus trahere, et commotis potestatibus inclinare, bene de Levial ban islo Dominus subdidit, dicens:

And because Antichrist, when he comes, shall also obtain the very highest powers of this world, who, raging with a twofold error, strives both to draw the hearts of men to himself by sent-forth preachers and to bend them by stirred-up powers, well concerning this Leviathan the Lord subjoined, saying:
