Quae scilicet justitia dum in hunc mundum contra vias peccatorum venit, antiquum hostem vincimus, a quo captivi tenebamur. Si enim in divinitatis fortitudine sic unigenitus Dei Filius invisibilis ma- neret, ut nil de nostra infirmitate susciperet, infir- mus homo ad cum invenire accessum gratiae quando potulsset? Consideratum quippe pondus ejus ma- gnitudinis opprimeret potius quam juvaret. Sed for- tis e super omnia apparuit infirmus inter omnia, ut dura nobis ex assumpta infirmitate congrueret, ad permanentem nos suam fortitudinem elevaret. In altitudine enim sua divinitas a nobis utpote parvu- lis apprehendi non potuerat, sed stravit se homini- bus f per humanitatem, et quasi in jacentem ascen- dimus; surrexit, et levati sumus.

For if the only-begotten Son of God had so remained invisible in the strength of His divinity, that He took nothing of our weakness, when could weak man have found access of grace to Him? The weight of His greatness, once considered, would rather have crushed than helped. But being strong above all things, He appeared weak among all things, so that, becoming congruent to us by the assumed weakness, He might raise us up to His abiding strength. For in the height of His divinity the Godhead could not be laid hold of by us who are as little ones; but He spread Himself out to men through His humanity, and, as it were, we mounted upon one lying down; He rose up, and we were lifted up.
