749:1

I bid. - Scientiam viarum tuarum nolumus. 51. Aliud est nescire vias Dei, aliud scire nolle. —. Eo ipso quo ejus scientiam apprehendere contemnunt. Sunt namque nonnulli qui ex eo quod Veritas dicit: Servus qui non cognovit voluntatem domini sui, d et facit digna plagis, vapulabit paucis; et servus sciens voluntatem domini sui, et non faciens juxta eam, va- pulabit multis ( Luc. xii, 47, 48); nolunt scire quod faciant, et quasi minus se vapulaturos existimant, si nesciant quod operari debuerunt. Sed aliud est ne- scisse, aliud scire noluisse. Nescit namque qui ap- prehendere vult, et non valet.

In the same place. — 'We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.' 51. It is one thing not to know the ways of God, another to be unwilling to know. — By this very fact that they disdain to apprehend the knowledge of Him. For there are some who, from that which the Truth says: 'The servant who knew not the will of his lord, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes; and the servant knowing the will of his lord, and not doing according to it, shall be beaten with many stripes' (Luke 12:47-48) — are unwilling to know what they do, and, as it were, reckon that they will be beaten less, if they do not know what they ought to have done. But it is one thing not to have known, another to have been unwilling to know. For he is ignorant who wishes to apprehend, and is not able.

Qui autem ut nesciat aurem a voce veritatis avertit, iste non nesciens, sed contemptor addic(??)tur. [ Vet XX.] Via autem Dei pax, via Dei humilitas, via Dei pati(??) ntia est. Sed quia haec omnia iniqui despiciunt, dicunt: Scientiam viarum tuarum nolumus. Dum enim in pnaesenti vita supe(??)biunt, dum honoribus inflantur, dum etiam si non habent appetunt, vias Dei in sua cogitatione contemnunt. Quia enim via Dei in hac vita humili- ta(??) fuet, ipse hic Deus et Dominus redemptor noster ad probra, ad contumelias, ad passionem venit, et adversa hujus mundi aequanimiter pertulit, prospera fortiter vitavit, ut et prospera doceret aeternae vitae appeti, et adversa praesentis vitae non formidari.

But whoever turns his ear away from the voice of truth that he may not know, this one is condemned not as ignorant, but as a despiser. Now the way of God is peace, the way of God is humility, the way of God is patience. But because the wicked despise all these, they say: 'We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.' For while in the present life they exalt themselves, while they are puffed up with honors, while they crave even what they do not possess, they despise the ways of God in their thought. For because the way of God in this life was humility, this very God and Lord our Redeemer came to reproaches, to insults, to suffering, and bore the adversities of this world with equanimity, and strongly avoided its prosperity, that He might teach both that the prosperity of eternal life is to be sought, and that the adversity of the present life is not to be feared.

Sed quia iniqui glorlam vitae praesentis appetunt, ignomi- niam fugiunt; dicere memorantur: Scientiam viarum tuarum nolumus. Scire quippe nolunt quod facere contemnunt 489 Quorum adhuc verba subduntur, cum dicitur:

But because the wicked crave the glory of the present life, and flee its ignominy, they take care to say: 'We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.' For indeed they are unwilling to know what they disdain to do. Whose words are still subjoined, when it is said:
