Ibid. — And being buried you shall sleep secure. 37. To the wicked present security brings toil; to the good present toil brings security. — For as to the wicked present security brings toil, so to the good present toil brings perpetual security. Whence he already knew that, buried, he slept secure, who said: For I am now being poured out as a libation, and the time of my dissolution is at hand; I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day (2 Tim. iv, 6). For because he had striven against passing evils without failing, he assuredly presumed without doubt upon the joys that abide. 38. The rest and the work of those free from earthly cares.

— Although «buried» can also be understood otherwise. For often, occupied with transitory things, we neglect to weigh through how many faults we sin; but if, the eye of consideration being turned back, the heap of earthly thought is shaken out from the bosom of the heart, whatever lay hidden in the mind is found. Whence holy men do not cease to search out the hiding-places of their souls; subtly examining themselves, they cast away the cares of earthly things, and, their thoughts being fully dug up, when they find themselves stung by no guilt of crime, they rest secure with themselves as upon a couch of the heart. They also seek to lie hidden from the doings of this world, ever considering their own concerns, and, when they are in no way constrained by the strap of governance, they refuse to judge things that are other men's.

Being dug up, therefore, they sleep secure; because while they vigilantly penetrate their own inmost parts, they hide themselves from the toilsome burdens of this world beneath the leisure of quiet. Whence it is further added:
