C ap. iv. V ers. 1, 2. — Respondens autem Eliphaz Themanites, dixit: Si coeperimus loqui tibi, forsitan moleste accipies. 29. Haereticorum verba blanda primum, post aspera. — Jam superius dicta sunt quae his vocabulorum in- terpretationibus exprimantur. Quia ergo festine ad indiscussa tendimus, prolata replicare devitamus. Hoc itaque est solerter intuendum, quod ii qui haere- ticorum speciem tenent, loqui molliter inchoant, di- centes: Si coeperimus loqui tibi, forsitan moleste acci- pies. Exasperare quippe haeretici auditores suos in exordio locutionis suae metuunt, ne vigilanter au- diantur, eorumque valde tristitiam declinant, ut ne- gligentiam capiant.
Chapter iv. Verses 1, 2. — 'But Eliphaz the Temanite answering, said: If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it grievously.' 29. The words of heretics are at first bland, afterward harsh. — Already above have been said the things which are expressed by these interpretations of the names. Because therefore we hasten on to matters not yet discussed, we avoid repeating what has been set forth. This therefore is to be shrewdly observed, that those who hold the type of heretics begin to speak softly, saying: 'If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it grievously.' For heretics fear to exasperate their hearers at the outset of their speech, lest they be listened to vigilantly, and they greatly avoid their sadness, that they may catch them off their guard.

Et a pene semper blanda sunt quae proponunt; sed aspera quae prosequendo subin- ferunt. Unde et nunc amici Job a reverentia man- suetae locutionis incipiunt, sed usque ad jacula asper- rimae invectionis erumpunt; quia et radices spina- rum molles sunt, sed tamen ex ipsa sua mollitie pro- ferunt unde pungunt. And almost always the things which they propose are bland; but harsh are the things which they subjoin in pursuing their argument. Whence also now the friends of Job begin from the reverence of gentle speech, but break out even to the javelins of most bitter invective; because the roots also of thorns are soft, yet nonetheless from their very softness they bring forth that wherewith they prick. There follows:
