968:1
44. Jniquis crescentibus, fides in opprobrium, et veritas in crimen eric. — Quibus videlicet verbis illud sanctac Ecclesiae tempus exprimimur, quo publice a reprobis irridetur, quando iniquis crescentibus, in opprobrium fides, et veritas erit in crimen. Taato quippe despectior unusquisque erit, quanto justior esse potuerit; tanto abominabilis, quanto laudabilis. Sancta itaque electorum Eeclesia afflictionis tempore proverbium pravis effcitur, quia cum bonos mori per toruienta conspiciunt, ab eis similitudinem maledicLionis sumunt. Quo enim transitoriam mortem vident, sed permanentem vitam non vident;
44. As the wicked increase, faith shall be turned to reproach, and truth to a crime. — By which words is expressed that time of the holy Church wherein she is publicly mocked by the reprobate, when, as the wicked increase, faith shall be for a reproach, and truth shall be for a crime. For each one shall be the more despised the more just he could have been; the more abominable, the more praiseworthy. Thus the holy Church of the elect becomes in the time of affliction a byword to the depraved, because when they behold good men dying by torments, they draw from them a likeness of a curse. For they see the transitory death, but see not the abiding life;
四十四。當不義之人增多時,信德必變為羞辱,真理必變為罪過。——這些話所表達的,乃是聖教會被被棄者公開嘲笑的那個時候,就是當不義之人增多時,信德必成為羞辱,真理必成為罪過。因為各人越是本可為義,就越發被人藐視;越是可稱讚,就越發被人憎惡。因此,選民的聖教會在患難的時候,對敗壞之人成了笑談,因為當他們看見善人在酷刑中死去時,就從他們身上取為咒詛的樣式。因為他們看見那短暫的死,卻看不見那長存的生命;

tanto magis deridendo mala praesentia fugiunt, quanto per intellectum intrisecus ad bona permanentia non pertingunt. Sed ea quæ f subjuncta sunt, quia obscurioribus sententiis 658 implicata non sunt, debemus sub brevitate transcurrere, ut ad ea in quibus laborandum esi valeamus citius pervenire. Sequitiir:
and so much the more do they by mockery flee present evils, the less by inward understanding they reach unto the abiding good. But the things which are subjoined, because they are not entangled in obscurer sentences, we ought to run through briefly, that we may the sooner arrive at those matters in which we must labour. There follows:
他們越是不能藉內在的悟性達到那長存的美善,就越發藉嘲笑逃避眼前的患難。但接下來所附加的話,因為並未纏繞在更晦澀的語句之中,我們應當簡略地掠過,好使我們能更快地達到那些必須費力鑽研的部分。接著說:
