I bid. — Et cum ab eis recessissem, detrahebant mihi. 55. Christo a miraculis quiescenti detraxerunt. — Quasi accedebat quippe ad corda populorum Domi- nus cum eis miracula demonstraret, et quasi recede- bat Cum nulla signa ostenderet. Sed recedenti Do- mino detrahebant cum a miraculis quiescenti prae- bere fidem nolebant. Sed quid mirum eum perpeti ista a plebibus, cum ipsi quoque qui legis doctores esse videbantur, qui cum 457 verbis propheticis incarnandum esse perhibebant, ct incarnatum vide- runt, et ab eo tamen perfidiae interruptione divisi sunt? De quibus subditur:
The same. — 'And when I had withdrawn from them, they spoke ill of me.' 55. When Christ rested from miracles, they spoke ill of Him. — For the Lord, as it were, drew near to the hearts of the peoples when He showed them miracles, and, as it were, withdrew when He displayed no signs. But they spoke ill of the withdrawing Lord when they were unwilling to give faith to Him who rested from miracles. But what wonder that He suffered these things from the common crowds, when those very ones who seemed to be teachers of the law — who with prophetic words had declared that He was to be incarnate, and saw Him incarnate — were nevertheless divided from Him by the rupture of perfidy? Concerning whom it is subjoined:
