V ers. 10. — Destruxit me undique, et pereo, et quasi avulsae arbori abstulit spem meam. 44. Praepositis corruentibus infirmi cadunt. — Quasi undique enim Ecclesia destruitur, atque in infirmis membris deperit, quando ipsa quae videbantur fortia corruunt, quando corona de capite abstrahitur, id est quando aeterna praemia etiam a praepositis negligun- tur. Bene autem de infirmis cadentibus subditur: Et quasi avulsae arbori abstulit spem meam. Arbor quippe vento impellitur ut cadat. Et quem minae terrent, ut ad injustitiam corruat, quid aliud quam arbor flatum venti pertulit, et statum suae rectitudinis amisit?
Verse 10. — 'He has destroyed me on every side, and I perish, and He has taken away my hope like an uprooted tree.' 44. When those set in authority fall, the weak fall. — For the Church is, as it were, destroyed on every side, and perishes in her weak members, when those very things that seemed strong collapse, when the crown is drawn away from the head — that is, when the eternal rewards are neglected even by those set in authority. But it is well added concerning the weak who fall: 'And He has taken away my hope like an uprooted tree.' For the tree is driven by the wind that it may fall. And he whom threats terrify, so that he falls into unrighteousness, what else has he done but that a tree has borne the blast of the wind and lost the state of its own uprightness?
第10節——「祂四面拆毀了我，我便滅亡；祂拔去我的指望，如同拔起的樹。」44. 當居首位者傾倒時，軟弱的人便跌倒。——因為當那些看似剛強的傾覆時，當冠冕從頭上被扯去——就是當連居首位者也疏忽永恆的獎賞時——教會便彷彿四面被拆毀，並在她軟弱的肢體中滅亡。但關於跌倒的軟弱者，接著加上一句甚好：「祂拔去我的指望，如同拔起的樹。」因為樹被風吹動便倒下。凡被威嚇所懼、以致陷入不義的人，豈不正如一棵樹承受了風的猛吹、失去自身正直的狀態嗎？

Quasi enim ex vento spem perdidit, qui, pravorum minis ac persuasionibus devictus, aeterna quae spera- bat praemia reliquit. Et quia plerumque contingit ut poenas quis metuens justitiam deserat, fit, judicante Deo, ut etiam justitiam deserens poenas quas timuit non evadat, et qui mentis interitum minime timuit, etiam carnis mala toleret, quae timebat. Unde adhuc subditur:
For, as it were, by the wind he lost his hope, who, overcome by the threats and persuasions of the wicked, forsook the eternal rewards he had hoped for. And because it often happens that one, fearing punishments, forsakes righteousness, it comes to pass, God so judging, that even in forsaking righteousness he does not escape the punishments he feared; and he who by no means feared the destruction of his mind endures also the evils of the flesh which he dreaded. Whence it is further added:
