VERS. 28. — Qui de nubibus fluunt. i5. Nec tamen apostolis hujus doctrinæ primis tra ditoribus præferendi.— Hi quippe de nubibus gurgites fluunt, quia si ex sanctis apostolis vis intelligentiae non inciperet, nequaquam per doctorum ora largior manaret. In Scriptura enim sacra aliquando per nubes, 859 mobiles quique homines, aliquando prophetae, aliquando autem apostoli designantur. Per nubes quippe mobilitas humanæ mentis exprimitur, sicut Salomon ait: Qui ventum observat, non seminat; et qui considerat nubes, nunquam metit (Eccle. XI, 4). Ventum procul dubio immundum spiritutn, nubes vera subjectos ei homines appellat;
V. 28. — Which flow from the clouds. Yet they are not to be preferred to the apostles, the first transmitters of this doctrine. — For these torrents flow from the clouds, because if from the holy apostles the force of understanding did not begin, by no means would a more abundant flow issue through the mouths of the teachers. For in Sacred Scripture sometimes by clouds are designated all changeable men, sometimes the prophets, sometimes the apostles. By clouds indeed the mutability of the human mind is expressed, as Solomon says: He who observes the wind does not sow; and he who considers the clouds never reaps (Eccles. 11:4). By the wind, without doubt, he calls the unclean spirit; by the clouds, the men subject to it;

quos toties huc illucque impellit et revocat, quoties tentationes ejus I in eorum cordibus suggestionum flatibus alternant. whom it drives hither and thither and calls back so often as its temptations alternate in their hearts by the blasts of suggestions. He, therefore, who observes the wind does not sow, because he who fears the temptations to come does not set his heart toward good works. And he who considers the clouds does not reap, because he who trembles before the terror of human mutability deprives himself of the recompense of the eternal reward. By clouds the prophets are figured, as it is said through the Psalmist: Dark water in the clouds of the air (Ps. 17:12); that is, hidden knowledge in the prophets. By clouds too the apostles are designated, as it is said through Isaiah: I will command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it (Isa. 5:6).

Ipsi igitur stellce, quia vitæ meritIs lucent; ipsi nubes, quia arentem nostri pectoris terram coelestis intelligentiae fluentis rigant. Si enim nubes non essent, nequaquam eos intuens propheta dixisset: Qui sunt isti, qui ut nubes volant (Isai. LX, 8)? Imbrium itaque gurgites de nubibus fluunt, quia profundae praedicationes sequentium intelligentiae originem a sanctis apostolis acceperunt. De quibus adbuc nubibus apte subjungitur:
They themselves, therefore, are stars, because they shine by the merits of their life; they themselves are clouds, because they water the parched earth of our breast with the streams of heavenly understanding. For if they were not clouds, the prophet beholding them would by no means have said: Who are these who fly like clouds (Isa. 60:8)? The torrents of showers, then, flow from the clouds, because the profound preachings of those who followed received the origin of their understanding from the holy apostles. Concerning which clouds it is still fitly added:
