36. Synagoga struthioni similis, alat habena humi repit. — Quid struthionis nomine, nisi synagoga signatur ? quae alas Legis habuit, sed corde in infimis repens, nunquam se a terra sublevavit. Quid vero per herodium et accipitrem, nisi antiqui patres exprimuntur, qui ad ea quae potuerunt intelligendo perspicere, valuerunt etiam vivendo pervolare ? Penna igitur struthionis, herodii et accipitris pennis est simitis, quia Synagogae vox priorum doctrinam Joquendo tenuit, sed vivendo nescivit. Unde et ejusdem Synagogae populos de Pharisaeis atque Scribis Veritas admonet, dicens: Super cathedram Moysi sederunt Scribce et Pharisæi.
36. The synagogue, like the ostrich, though it has wings, creeps upon the ground. What is signified by the name of the ostrich, if not the synagogue? which had the wings of the Law, but, creeping in its heart among things lowest, never lifted itself from the earth. And what is expressed by the heron and the hawk, if not the ancient fathers, who, unto those things which they were able to perceive by understanding, were able also to fly aloft by their living? The feather, therefore, of the ostrich is like the feathers of the heron and the hawk, because the voice of the Synagogue held the doctrine of the elders by speaking, but knew it not by living. Whence the Truth also admonishes the people of that same Synagogue concerning the Pharisees and Scribes, saying: The Scribes and Pharisees have sat upon the chair of Moses.
三十六、會堂如鴕鳥，雖有翅膀卻在地上爬行。鴕鳥之名所表徵的，豈不是會堂嗎？她有律法的翅膀，但心卻在至卑之事中爬行，從未把自己從地上抬起。蒼鷺和鷹所表達的，豈不是古時的列祖嗎？他們對那憑悟性所能領會之事，也能藉生活飛騰而上。因此，鴕鳥的羽毛像蒼鷺和鷹的羽毛，因為會堂的聲音藉言語持守列祖的教訓，卻不藉生活認識它。因此，真理也就法利賽人和文士警戒那同一會堂的百姓，說：文士和法利賽人坐在摩西的位上。

Omnia trgo quæcunque diserint vobis, servate et facite, secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere ( Matth. XXIII, 2 ). Multa autem dicere de herodii vita potuimus; sed quia penna ejus tantummodo ad memoriam deducitur, de vita loqui probibemur.
Therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do; but according to their works do ye not (Matt. 23:2–3). Now we could have said many things concerning the life of the heron; but because its feather alone is brought to remembrance, we are forbidden to speak of its life.
所以凡他們所吩咐你們的，你們都要謹守遵行；但不要效法他們的行為（馬太福音二十三2-3）。我們本可就蒼鷺的生活說許多事；但因只提到牠的羽毛，我們便被禁止談論牠的生活。
