879:1
17. Hypocrita Deum non invocat, nisi in angustiis positus. — Tunc quippe hypocrita Deum invocat, cum hunc terrenarum rerum tribulatio augustat. Nam cum in hoc saeculo effeclum quæsitæ felicitatis invenerit, auctorem qui hanc ipsam felicitatem tribuit non requirit. Quia vero, ut prædiximus, case ars docentium debel ut in auditorum suorum mentibus prius studeant perversa destruere, et postmodum recta prædicare, ne bonum sanctæ prædicatienis semea plena malis corda non capiam; unde ad Jereiniam dicitur: Ecce constitui te hodie super gentes et regna, ut evellus et destiuas, et disperdas et dissipes, et œdifices, et plantes (Jerem, I, 10) (prius itaque jnbctur ut destruat, et postmodum ædificet;
17. The hypocrite does not call upon God except when set in straits. — For the hypocrite calls upon God only when the tribulation of earthly matters presses him hard. For when he has found in this world the fulfilment of the happiness he sought, he does not seek the Author who bestowed that very happiness. But because, as we have said before, the art of teachers must be such that they strive first to destroy what is perverse in the minds of their hearers, and afterwards to preach what is right, lest the good seed of holy preaching find no room in hearts full of evils — whence it is said to Jeremiah: 「Behold, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, and to destroy and to throw down, and to build and to plant」 (Jeremiah 1:10). (First, therefore, he is commanded to destroy, and afterwards to build;
十七、偽善者唯有陷入困境時才呼求神。——因為偽善者唯有當屬世事務的患難逼迫他時,才呼求神。當他在此世尋得所渴求之幸福的實現時,就不再尋求那賜下此幸福的創造者。但正如我們先前所說,教導者的技藝必當如此:他們要先竭力在聽者心中摧毀邪謬之事,然後才宣講正道,免得神聖宣講的美好種子,落在充滿諸惡的心中無處可容;故對耶利米說:「看哪,我今日立你在列邦列國之上,為要施行拔出、拆毀、毀壞、傾覆,又要建立、栽植」(耶利米書一章10節)。(因此先命他毀壞,然後才建造;

prius ut evellat, et postmodum plantel, quia nequaquam rcctae veritatis fundamentum ponitur, nisi prius erroris fabrica destruatur); beatus Job postquam causas universalis Ecclesiæ amicorum suorum dictis quasi contra hæreticorum verba respondit, eorumque elationem multimoda responsione dextruxit, jam docere se perhibet, ut videlicet aperte videatur in bis quæ subdidit recta plantare, in his vero quæ præmisit evulsisse perversa. Sequitur:
first to root out, and afterwards to plant, because the foundation of upright truth is by no means laid unless first the edifice of error be destroyed.) Blessed Job, after he had answered the arguments of his friends concerning the causes of the universal Church, as it were against the words of heretics, and had by his manifold reply overthrown their arrogance, now shows that he is teaching — namely so that in what he adds he may plainly be seen to plant what is right, while in what he has set forth before he may be seen to have rooted out what is perverse. There follows:
