VERSe 7. — Cum me laudarent simul astra matutina. 34. Angeli astra matutina cut appellali.— Quia enim prima in tempore condita natura rationabilium spirituum creditur, non immerito matutina astra angeli vocantur. Quod si ita est, dum terra eSset invisibilis et incomposita, dum tenebrae essent super abyssum (Genes. I, 2), venturum diem subsequentis sæculi per lucem sapieuliæ existendo prævenerunt. Nec nee g1igenter audiendum est quod additur, Simul, quia nimirum astra matutina etiam cum vespertinis Redemptoris potentiam laudant, dum electi angeli etiam cum redemptis in mundi fine hominibus largitatem gratie supernae g!orificant.

VERSE 7. — 'When the morning stars praised Me together.' 34. Why the angels are called morning stars. — For because the nature of rational spirits is believed to have been created first in time, not undeservedly are the angels called morning stars. And if this is so, while the earth was invisible and unformed, while darkness was upon the deep (Gen. 1:2), by existing they anticipated through the light of wisdom the day of the age that was to follow. Nor is that which is added, 'together,' to be heard negligently, because assuredly the morning stars praise the power of the Redeemer even together with the evening ones, while the elect angels, even together with redeemed men, at the end of the world glorify the bounty of heavenly grace.

d Ipse quippe ut nos ad laudem conditoris accenderent, hoc quod superius diximus, orta per carnem luce, clamaverunt: Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonœ volun tatis (Luc. II, 14). Simul ergo 910 laudant, quia redemptioni nostrae voces suæ exultationis accommodant. Simul laudant; quia dum nos conspiciunt recipi, suum numerum gaudent repleri.. Qui ei fortasse ideo matutina astra memorantur, quia s.ppe ad exhortandos homines missi sunt; et dum tenturum tnane nuntiant, ab humanis rordihns præsentis vitæ tenebras fugant. Sed ecce augeli divinum potentiam laudant, quia ipsa eos tantæ claritatis e visio dilatat.

For they themselves, that they might kindle us to the praise of the Creator, cried out that which we said above, when the light had arisen through the flesh: 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will' (Luke 2:14). Together therefore they praise, because they accommodate the voices of their exultation to our redemption. Together they praise, because while they behold us being received, they rejoice that their own number is filled up. And perhaps they are for this reason called morning stars, because they have often been sent to exhort men; and while they announce the morning to come, they put to flight from human hearts the darkness of the present life. But behold, the angels praise the divine power, because the very vision of so great a brightness enlarges them.

Nos autem qui redimimur, sed tamen corruptione adhuc carnis Hravamur, donum quod percipimus, r qUI virtute laudamus ? Quomodo enim valebit lingua dicere, qltod non sufficit mens nostra sentire 1 Sequitur:

But we who are redeemed, yet are still weighed down by the corruption of the flesh, with what power shall we praise the gift which we receive? For how shall the tongue be able to tell that which our mind does not suffice to feel? There follows:
