22. Nemo ita justus, ut in carne corruptibili mni peccato careat. — Quid per lunam, nisi CunCta sinut Ecclesia; quid per stellas, nisi singulorum bene viventium animæ designantur? qui inter pravorum hominum conversationes, dum magnis virtutibus eminent, quasi in tenebris noctis lucent. Unde per Paulum quoque discipulis dicitur: Inter quos tucetis sicut luminaria in mundo (Philipp, II, 15). Quia enun sancta Ecclesia lunæ appellatone exprimitur, propheta testatur, dicens: Elevatus est sol, et luna stetit in ordine suo (Habac. III, 11). Elevato enim sole, in suo ordine luna statuitur, quia ascendente ad coelos Domino, sancta protinus Ecclesia in prædicationis auctoritate roboratur.

22. No one is so just that in corruptible flesh he is free of every sin.—What is designated by the moon, if not the whole Church together? What by the stars, if not the souls of each of those who live well? who, amid the conversations of wicked men, while they are eminent in great virtues, shine as it were in the darkness of night. Whence also it is said through Paul to the disciples: 'Among whom you shine as lights in the world' (Philippians II, 15). For that the holy Church is expressed by the appellation of the moon, the prophet testifies, saying: 'The sun was lifted up, and the moon stood in its order' (Habakkuk III, 11). For when the sun is lifted up, the moon is set in its order, because when the Lord ascends to heaven, the holy Church is at once strengthened in the authority of preaching.

Et quia stellarum nomine elccti signantur, rursum Paulus insinuat, dicens: Stetla enim a stella di fert in claritate (1 Cor. xv, 41 ) [ V et. IX.] Luna ergo non splendet, et stellae non sunt mundæ in conspectu ejus, quia nec sancta Ecclesia virtułe propria tot miraculis emicat, nisi hane praevenientis gratiae dona perfundant, nec singulorum 544 bene viventium mentes a peccatorum maculis mundæ sunt, si remota pietate judicentur, quia apud districti judicis oculos, sua unumquemque corruptibilitas inquinat, e nisi hunc quotidie gratia parcentis tergat. Electorum quippe animus prodire ad libertatem justitiæ nititur, sed adhuc compede infirmitatis tenetur;

And because by the name of stars the elect are signified, again Paul intimates, saying: 'For one star differs from another star in glory' (1 Cor. XV, 41). Therefore the moon does not shine, and the stars are not clean in his sight, because neither does the holy Church shine forth by its own power in so many miracles, unless the gifts of prevenient grace pour into it, nor are the minds of each of those who live well clean from the stains of sins, if they be judged with piety set aside, because before the eyes of the strict Judge, each one's own corruptibility defiles him, unless the grace of him who spares wipes it away daily. For the mind of the elect strives to go forth to the liberty of justice, but is still held by the fetter of infirmity;

et culpas quidem subigerc perfecte desiderat, sed quousque corruptione carnis astringitur, ejus vinculis, etiam cum non vult, ligatur. Hinc itaque f colligat quanto peccatorum pondere pressi sint qui contra hæc decertarc negligunt, si Ilene culpam nec illi superant, qui contra hanc viriliter pugnant. Uude et postquam dictum est: Ecce etiam luna non splendet, et stellæ non sunt mundæ in conspec u ejus, protinus additur:

and it indeed perfectly desires to subdue its faults, but so long as it is bound by the corruption of the flesh, it is tied by its chains even when it does not wish. Hence, therefore, let one gather with how great a weight of sins those are pressed down who neglect to fight against these things, if not even those completely overcome fault who manfully fight against it. Whence also, after it has been said, 'Behold, even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not clean in his sight,' at once it is added:
