V ers, 9. — Domus eorum securae sunt et pacatae, (??)t non est virga Dei super illos. 47. Securae et pacatae sunt, quia peccantes vivunt, lugenda agunt, et gaudia non relinquunt. Virga eos supernae disciplinae non percutit, et ta(??)to amplius in culpa proficiunt, quanto minus ex culpa feriuntur. Sed quia intus quae prosperantur audivimus, in agris quoque quae prosperitas arrideat c videamus. Se- quitur: V ers. 10. — Bos eorum concepit, a et non abortivit; vacca peperit, et non est privata fetu suo. Vulgaris locutionis usus est ut bovem masculum et vaccam feminam vocet, sed litteraturae ( Id est, grammaticae), locutio bovem communis generis appel- lat. Unde nunc dicitur:
Verse 9. — 'Their houses are secure and peaceful, and the rod of God is not upon them.' 47. They are secure and peaceful, because they live sinning, do what is to be lamented, and do not forsake their joys. The rod of heavenly discipline does not strike them, and by so much the more do they advance in guilt, by how much the less they are smitten for their guilt. But because we have heard what prospers within, let us also see what prosperity smiles in the fields. There follows: Verse 10. — 'Their ox conceived, and did not miscarry; their cow calved, and was not deprived of her offspring.' It is the usage of common speech to call the male 'ox' (bos) and the female 'cow' (vacca), but the speech of grammar calls the ox a noun of common gender. Whence now it is said:
第九節。——「他們的家宅平安穩妥，神的杖不臨到他們身上。」47. 他們平安穩妥，因他們一面犯罪一面存活，行當哀慟之事，卻不撇棄歡樂。天上管教的杖不擊打他們，他們愈少因罪受責打，就愈在罪中長進。但我們既已聽見家內何等興旺，也讓我們看看田間有何等亨通向他們微笑。接著說：第十節。——「他們的牛懷胎不掉胎，母牛下犢不喪失牠的胎。」通俗的說法慣以雄者為「牛」（bos），雌者為「母牛」（vacca），但文法（即語法）的用語稱「牛」為通性名詞。因此現今說：

Dominis gregum prima felicitas est, si grex sterilita- tem non habens concipit; secunda, si conceptus ad partum venit; tertia autem, si hoc quod partum est per nutrimenta ad provectum ducatur. Ut ergo tota simul adesse impiis demonstraret, eorum greges bea- tus Job asserit concepisse, et non abortisse; peperisse, et fetu proprio non esse privatos. Minor autem est felicitas, si cum greges crescunt, custodes quoque gregum non proficiunt. Unde et ad fecunditatem gregum mox fecunditas familiae subrogatur. Nam dicitur:
'Their ox conceived, and did not miscarry; their cow calved, and was not deprived of her offspring.' To the owners of flocks the first happiness is if the flock, not being barren, conceives; the second, if the conception comes to birth; the third, if that which is born is brought to full growth through nourishment. That he might therefore show all these to be present together to the wicked, blessed Job asserts that their flocks conceived and did not miscarry; brought forth, and were not deprived of their own offspring. But it is a lesser happiness if, while the flocks increase, the keepers of the flocks do not also multiply. Whence to the fruitfulness of the flocks the fruitfulness of the household is soon substituted. For it is said:
