V ers. 3. — Et mihi est cor, sicut et vobis, nec infe- rior vestri sum. 45. Hujus arrogantia modeste comprimenda. — Quis etenim nesciat quantum beati Job vita atque scientia amicorum ejus scientiam excedat? Sed ut eorum su- perbiam corrigat, esse se inferiorem negat; et ne suae humilitatis limitem transeat, esse se superiorem ta- cet: nec proferendo se, sed conferendo, indicat quod de se hi qui sibi longe sunt impares discant, ut dum sponte inflectitur sapientia quae eminet, nequaquam se contra vires erigat scientia quae jacet. Quos bene mox ad aequalitatis sensum revocat, quia tumere valde quasi de singularitate magnitudinis pensat, cum sub- sequenter adjungit:
Ver. 3. — And I also have a heart, as well as you, neither am I inferior to you. 45. Their arrogance is to be modestly repressed. — For who does not know how greatly the life and knowledge of blessed Job exceeds the knowledge of his friends? But that he may correct their pride, he denies that he is inferior; and lest he pass the limit of his humility, he is silent that he is superior: not by putting himself forward, but by comparing, he indicates what those who are far unequal to him may learn from him — so that, while the wisdom that is eminent bends of its own accord, the knowledge that lies low may in no way raise itself against its strength. Whom he soon well recalls to a sense of equality, because he weighs that to swell greatly as concerning the singularity of greatness, when he subsequently adds:
