807:1
V ers. 15. — Et idcirco a facie ejus turbatus sum, et considerans eum, timore sollicitor. 50. Malis securitatem prae se ferentibus, justi semper timent.
Verse 15. — And therefore am I troubled at His face, and considering Him, I am disquieted with fear. 50. While the wicked bear themselves with an air of security, the righteous ever fear. — Well is he troubled at the face of the Lord who sets the terror of His Majesty before the gaze of his own heart, and is shaken with dread of His rectitude, while he perceives himself not to be fit for rendering account, if he should be strictly judged. And rightly is it said: And considering Him, I am disquieted with fear, because when anyone least considers the force of the divine reproof, he least fears it; and the more he is a stranger to the consideration of the inward strictness, the more he is, as it were, secure in this life.
807:2
For righteous men ever return to the secret chamber of the heart, they behold the force of the hidden strictness, they stand attendant upon the judgment of the inmost Majesty, so that they may at length be the more secure, in that here, as long as they lived, they were unwilling to be secure. For when the minds of the wicked refuse to consider what they should fear, they at length arrive, rejoicing, at that from which, fearing, they can by no means escape. But behold, of blessed Job we know that he was given to frequent sacrifices to God, that he was devoted to hospitality, spent upon the needs of the poor, humble even to those subject to him, kind to those who opposed him; and yet he received so many scourges, nor was he now secure amid the scourges, but still feared, still, considering the force of the divine strictness, trembled.
807:3
Quid nos itaque miseri, quid peccato- res dicimus, si sic timet, qui sic egit? Sed tanti timoris pondus an a semetipso habeat, innotestat. Sequitur:
What then shall we wretched ones, what shall we sinners say, if he so fears who so acted? But whether he has the weight of so great a fear from himself, becomes known. There follows:
