V ers. 9. — Memento, quaeso, quod sicut lutum feceris me. 76. Quare angelus irremissibiliter peccavit, non homo. — Angelorum spiritus idcirco irremissibiliter pecca- verunt, quia tanto robustius stare poterant, quanto eos carnis admistio non tenebat. Homo vero idcirco post culpam veniam meruit, quia per carnale corpus aliquid quo semetipso minor esset accepit. Unde et apud respectum judicis argumentum pietatis est haec eadem infirmitas camis; sicut per Psalmistam dicitur: Ipse autem est misericors, a et propitius fiet peccatis eorum, et non disperdet eos. Et multiplicavit ut aver- teret iram suam ab eis, et non accendit omnem iram suam, et rememoratus est quia caro sunt ( Psal. lxxvii, 38).
Verse 9. — 'Remember, I beseech Thee, that Thou hast made me as the clay.' 76. Why the angel sinned irremissibly, but not man. — The angelic spirits therefore sinned irremissibly, because they were able to stand the more strongly in that the admixture of the flesh did not hold them. But man deserved pardon after his fault, because through his fleshly body he received something whereby he might be less than himself. Whence, in the regard of the Judge, this same infirmity of the flesh is a plea for loving-kindness; as it is said through the Psalmist: 'But He is merciful, and will be propitious to their sins, and will not destroy them. And He multiplied to turn away His anger from them, and did not kindle all His wrath; and He remembered that they are flesh' (Psalm 77:38).
第九節。——「求你記念，你造我如摶泥一般。」76. 天使為何不得赦免地犯罪，而人卻非如此。——天使的靈之所以無可赦免地犯罪，是因牠們既不受肉體攙雜的牽制，就本能更堅強地站立。但人在犯過之後卻蒙了赦免，因他藉屬肉的身體領受了某種使他能比自己更低微的東西。故此在審判者眼中，肉體這同樣的軟弱正是求憐憫的憑據；正如藉詩人所說：「但祂有憐憫，赦免他們的罪孽，不滅絕他們；並且屢次消他的怒氣，不發盡他的忿怒。祂想到他們不過是血氣」（詩77:38）。

Ut lutum ergo homo factus est, quia de limo est ad conditionem sumptus. Lutum quippe fit, cum se aqua terrae conspergit. Sicut lutum itaque homo est conditus, quia quasi aqua infundit pulverem, cum anima rigat carnem. Quod sanctus vir bene pietati judicis objicit, cum postulans dicit: Memento, quaeso, quod sicut lutum feceris me. Ac si aperte dicat: In- firmitatem carnis considera, et reatum iniquitatis laxa. Ubi apere quoque mors ejusdem carnis adjun- gitur, cum protinus subinfertur:
As clay, therefore, man was made, because he was taken from the mire for his creation. For clay comes to be when water bedews the earth. As clay, then, man was created, because it as it were pours water upon the dust, when the soul waters the flesh. Which the holy man well casts before the loving-kindness of the Judge, when, entreating, he says: 'Remember, I beseech Thee, that Thou hast made me as the clay.' As if he openly said: Consider the infirmity of the flesh, and loosen the guilt of iniquity. Whereupon the death also of that same flesh is joined, when straightway it is subjoined:
