V ers. 5. - Attendite me, et obstupescite. 43. Ex Job percussionibus discendum quid formi- dare debeamus. —Id est, considerate quae egi, et ad- miramini in hac percussione quae patior. Qui adhuc recte subinfert, dicens: I bid. — Et superponite digitum ori vestro. Ac si aperte dicat: Scientes bona quae egi, et consi- derantes mala quae patior, vosmetipsos etiam a ver- borum culpa compescite, atque in meis percussio- nibus vestra damna formidate. Vel certe quia digitis quaeque discernimus, non incongrue per digitum discretio designatur. Unde et per Psalmistam dicitur: Benedictus dominus Deus meus, qui docet manus meas ad praelium, et digitos meos ad bellum ( Psal. cxliii, (??)).
Verse 5. — 'Attend to me, and be astonished.' 43. From Job's chastisements we must learn what we ought to dread. — That is, consider what I have done, and marvel in this affliction which I suffer. And still rightly he subjoins, saying: 'And lay your finger upon your mouth.' As if he plainly said: Knowing the good things I have done, and considering the evils I suffer, restrain yourselves also from the guilt of words, and in my chastisements dread your own losses. Or certainly, because we discern things by our fingers, not inaptly discretion is signified by the finger. Whence also it is said through the Psalmist: 'Blessed be the Lord my God, who teaches my hands to fight, and my fingers to war' (Psalm 143).
第五節。——「你們留心看我，就必驚駭。」43. 從約伯所受的擊打，我們當學會該懼怕甚麼。——就是說，思想我所行的，並在我所受的這擊打中稀奇。他隨即又正確地加上說：「並且以手指按住你們的口。」彷彿明明地說：既知道我所行的善，又思想我所受的惡，就也當約束自己免於言語之罪，並在我所受的擊打中懼怕你們自己的損失。或者，因為我們是用手指分辨萬事，用手指來表明分辨的智慧並非不合宜。因此藉詩人也說：「耶和華我的神是應當稱頌的，他教導我的手爭戰，教導我的指頭打仗」（詩篇一四三篇）。

Per manus videlicet operationem, per digitos vero discretionem designans. [ Vet. XVIII.] Digitus ergo ori superponitur cum per discretionem lingua refre- natur, ne per hoc quod loquitur in stultitiae culpam delabatur. Ait ergo: Superponite digitum ori vestro, id est, locutioni vestrae discretionis virtutem adjun- gite, ut per hxc quae recta contra hypocritam dicitis quibus sint dicenda videatis. Sequitur:
By the hands signifying action, but by the fingers discretion. The finger therefore is laid upon the mouth when the tongue is restrained by discretion, lest through what it utters it fall into the guilt of folly. He says therefore: 'Lay your finger upon your mouth,' that is, join to your speech the virtue of discretion, that through these right things which you say against the hypocrite you may see to whom they ought to be said. There follows:
