47:1
13. Sancit omnes quasi stellae, noctem vitae praesentis illuminant. — Sed libet inter haec mira divinae dis- pensationis opera cernere quomodo ad illuminandam noctem vitae praesentis astra quaeque suis vicibus in coeli faciem veniant, quousque in finem noctis Re- demptor humani generis, quasi verus lucifer, surgat. Nocturnum namque spatium, dum decedentium suc- cedentiumque stellarum cursibus illustratur, magno coeli decore peragitur. Ut ergo noctis nostrae tenebras suo tempore editus, vicissimque permutatus stella- rum radius tangeret, ad ostendendam innocentiam, venit Abel; ad docendam 14 actionis munditiam, venit Enoch; ad insinuandam longanimitatem spei et operis, venit Noe;
13. The saints, like stars, illumine the night of the present life. — But it is pleasant amid these things to behold the wondrous works of divine dispensation, how, to illumine the night of the present life, all the stars come in their turns into the face of heaven, until at the night's end the Redeemer of the human race, as the true morning star, arises. For the space of night, while it is lit by the courses of stars departing and succeeding, is passed through with the great beauty of heaven. In order therefore that the ray of the stars, put forth in its own time and changed one after another, might touch the darkness of our night: to show forth innocence, came Abel; to teach purity of action, came Enoch; to intimate the long-suffering of hope and of work, came Noah;
十三、眾聖徒如同星辰,照亮今生的黑夜。——但在這些事之中,喜見神奇妙安排的作為:為要照亮今生的黑夜,眾星如何各按其次序來到天空的表面,直到黑夜的盡頭,人類的救贖主如同真晨星升起。因為黑夜的時段,當它被將沒與升起之眾星的運行所照亮時,便以天上極大的美麗度過。因此,為要使那按其時發出、彼此更替之星辰的光芒觸及我們黑夜的幽暗:為顯明無辜,亞伯來了;為教導行為的純潔,以諾來了;為示意盼望與工作的恆忍,挪亞來了;
47:2
to manifest obedience, came Abraham; to demonstrate the chastity of married life, came Isaac; to intimate the endurance of toil, came Jacob; to render the grace of good recompense for evil, came Joseph; to show forth meekness, came Moses; to fashion confidence against adversities, came Joshua; to show forth patience amid scourges, came Job. Behold how shining are the stars we discern in heaven, that we may walk the journey of our night with unstumbling foot of work.
47:3
Nam cognitioni hominum divina dispensatio quot justos exhibuit, quasi tot astra super peccantium tenebras coe(??)um misit, d quousque verus lucifer surgeret, qui aeternum nobis mane nuntians, stellis caeteris clarius ex divini- tate radiaret. 14. Cuncti Christum praenuntiarunt, maxime Job.— Quem electi omnes dum bene vivendo praeeunt, et rebus et vocibus prophetando promiserunt. Nullus etenim justus fuit, qui non ejus per figuram nuntius exstiterit. Dignum quippe erat ut in semetipsis bonum omnes ostenderent, de quo et omnes boni essent, et quod prodesse omnibus scirent. Unde et sine cessa- tione promitti debuit quod et sine aestimatione daba- tur percipi, et sine fine retineri;
For as many righteous men as divine dispensation exhibited to the knowledge of men, it sent as it were so many stars into the heaven over the darkness of sinners, until the true morning star should arise, who, announcing to us the eternal morning, would shine forth from His divinity more brightly than the other stars. 14. All foretold Christ, most of all Job. — Whom all the elect, while by living well they go before Him, both by deeds and by voices they promised in prophesying. For there was no righteous man who did not exist as a herald of Him by figure. It was fitting, indeed, that all should show forth in themselves the good from whom both all were good, and which they knew to profit all. Whence also it had to be promised without ceasing, which was given both to be received beyond estimation, and to be held without end;
因為神的安排向人的認識所顯出多少義人,就彷彿差了多少星辰進入諸天,照在罪人的幽暗之上,直等到真晨星升起——祂向我們宣告永恆的清晨,並要從祂的神性中比別的星辰更明亮地發光。十四、眾人都預言基督,尤以約伯為最。——眾蒙揀選者藉美好的生活行在祂前面,並藉行為與言語在預言中應許了祂。因為沒有一個義人不曾藉表號作祂的先鋒。實在合宜的是:眾人都當在自己身上顯出那位美善者——眾人的美善皆從祂而來,並且他們知道祂使眾人得益。故此,那既是被賜下、超乎估量地被領受、又無窮盡地被持守之物,也當不住地被應許;
47:4
ut simul omnia sae- cula e dicerent quid in redemptione communi saecu- lorum finis exhiberet. Unde et necesse fuit ut etiam beatus Job, qui tanta incarnationis ejus mysteria pro- tulit, eum quem voce diceret ex conversatione signa- ret; et per ea quae pertulit, quae passurus esset ostenderet; tantoque verius passionis illius sacramenta praediceret, quanto haec non loquendo tantummodo, sed etiam patiendo prophetaret. [ Vet. XI.] Sed quia Redemptor noster unam se personam cum sancta Ecclesia, a quam assumpsit, exhibuit; de ipso enim dicitur, Qui est caput omnium nostrum ( Ephes. iv, 15); et de Ecclesia ejus scriptum est: Corpus Christi, quod est Ecclesia ( Colos. i, 24);
so that all ages together might tell what the end of the ages would bestow in the common redemption. Whence it was necessary that even blessed Job, who brought forth so great mysteries of His incarnation, should signify by his conversation Him whom he was to declare by voice; and by the things he endured should show forth what He was to suffer; and should predict the sacraments of His passion so much the more truly, in that he prophesied these not by speaking only, but also by suffering. [Old XI.] But because our Redeemer showed Himself one person with the holy Church, which He assumed—for of Him it is said, 'Who is the head of us all' (Ephesians 4:15); and of His Church it is written, 'The body of Christ, which is the Church' (Colossians 1:24)—
47:5
quisquis eum in seme- tipso significat, modo hunc ex capite, modo ex corpore designat, ut non solum vocem capitis, sed etiam cor- poris teneat. Unde et Isaias propheta ejusdem Domini verba exprimens, ait: Quasi sponso posuit mihi mi- tram, et quasi sponsam ornavit me ornamento (Isaiae lxi, 10). Quia igitur ipse in capite sponsus, ipse est in corpore sponsa, necesse est ut cum nonnunquam aliquid de capite dicitur, sensim ac subito etiam ad vocem corporis derivetur; et rursum cum de corpore aliquid dicitur, repente ad vocem capitis ascendatur. [ Vet. XII.] Beatus ergo Job venturi cum suo corpore typum Redemptoris insinuat;
whoever signifies Him in himself designates Him now from the head, now from the body, so that he may hold not only the voice of the head, but also of the body. Whence also the prophet Isaiah, expressing the words of that same Lord, says: 'As a bridegroom He has set a mitre upon me, and as a bride He has adorned me with an ornament' (Isaiah 61:10). Since therefore He Himself is the bridegroom in the head, He Himself is the bride in the body, it is necessary that when sometimes something is said of the head, it should gradually and suddenly pass over also to the voice of the body; and again, when something is said of the body, it should suddenly ascend to the voice of the head. [Old XII.] Blessed Job, therefore, intimates the type of the Redeemer to come with His body;
凡在自己身上表明祂的人,時而從頭、時而從身體來指明祂,好叫他不僅持定頭的聲音,也持定身體的聲音。故此,先知以賽亞表達那同一位主的話語,說:「祂為我戴上冠冕如新郎,又給我妝飾如新婦」(以賽亞書六十一章10節)。既然祂自己在頭中是新郎,祂自己在身體中就是新婦,因此當有時論到頭說某事時,必漸漸而又忽然地轉到身體的聲音;反之,當論到身體說某事時,又忽然上升到頭的聲音。〔舊譯本十二〕所以有福的約伯,示意那將要與祂身體同來之救贖主的預表;
47:6
but his wife, who provokes him to curse, designates the life of carnal men; who, placed within the holy Church with uncorrected morals, in that by faith they are near to the good, do by their life the more grievously oppress them; because, while as faithful they cannot be shunned, they are the worse tolerated by the faithful, the more inwardly they are borne. 15. The friends of Job foreshadow heretics. — But his friends, who while they counsel inveigh against him, express the figure of heretics, who under the appearance of counselling carry on the business of seducing. Whence also they speak to blessed Job as it were on behalf of the Lord, yet nonetheless are not approved by the Lord; because, namely, all heretics, while they strive to defend God, offend Him. Whence it is openly said to them even by the same holy man:
'I desire to dispute with God: showing you first to be forgers of lies, and cultivators of perverse doctrines' (Job 13:3-4). It is established, therefore, that they, whom the holy man reproves as serving the cult of perverse doctrines, bear by their erring the type of heretics. [Rev. VII.] But every heretic, in that he is seen to defend God, opposes His truth, the Psalmist attesting, who says: 'That thou mayest destroy the enemy and the defender' (Psalm 8:3). For he is an enemy and a defender, who assails the God whom he preaches.
