Same place. — All the days in which I now serve as a soldier, I wait until my change come. 17. Job, despising the course of this life, seeks the state of immutability. — He therefore who awaits his change with such longing shows how certain he is of the resurrection; and he makes known how greatly he despises the course of the present life, in that he calls it 'warfare.' For in warfare one always presses toward the end, and daily the term of its conclusion is awaited. He therefore despises the course of this life and seeks the state of stability, who, by the fact that he serves as a soldier in a state of change, hastens to arrive at his transformation. For to the righteous man in this life the very burden of his corruption is a load.

Quod vigiliae defatigant, somnus quaeritur, ut vigi- liarum labor atque anxietas temperetur. Sed non- nunquam etiam somnus occidit. Fames corpus atterit, atque, ut ejus necessitas repellatur, cibi requirun- tur; sed saepe et cibi gravant, qui ad repellendum debilitatis gravamen quaesiti fuerant. Gravis itaque est sarcina corruptionis, quae nisi ita gravis esset, Paulus nequaquam diceret: Vanitati creatura subjecta est, non volens, sed propter eum qui subjecit eam in spe, quia et ipsa creatura liberabitur a servitute cor- ruptionis, in libertatem gloriae filiorum Dei. Scimus enim quod omnis creatura ingemiscit, et parturit usque adhuc ( Rom. viii, 20).
When wakeful vigils weary us, sleep is sought, that the labor and anxiety of the vigils may be tempered. But sometimes sleep too slays. Hunger wears down the body, and, that its necessity may be repelled, foods are sought; but often even foods weigh us down, which had been sought to repel the burden of weakness. Heavy therefore is the burden of corruption, which, unless it were so heavy, Paul would by no means say: The creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who made it subject in hope, because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the sons of God. For we know that every creature groans and travails in pain even until now (Romans viii, 20).
