The same place. — A simple and upright man, and one fearing God, and departing from evil. 43. For what reason Christ is simple, upright, etc. He made His divinity doubtful to the devil, on account of the things which He suffered. — For there came among men the mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus: to hold forth an example of life to men, simple; to not spare the malignant spirits, upright; to conquer pride, fearing God; and to wipe away the impurity of life in His elect, departing from evil. For of Him it is chiefly said through Isaiah: And the spirit of the fear of the Lord shall fill him (Isa. 11:3). And He alone departed from evil in a singular way: because He refused to imitate the deeds which He found among men, since, as Peter attests:

He committed no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth (1 Pet. 2:22). There follows: Satan answering said: Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not fenced him in, and his house, and all his substance round about? You have blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased on the earth. The ancient enemy recognized that the Redeemer of the human race, his conqueror, had come into the world: whence also, through a possessed man, it is said in the Gospel: What have we to do with you, Son of God? Have you come here before the time to torment us? (Matt. 8:29).

Yet at first, when he perceived this one to be passible, when he saw that the humanity was able to suffer mortal things, all that he had suspected of His divinity came into doubt for him through the arrogance of his pride. For, savoring nothing but the proud, while he beholds this one to be lowly, he doubted Him to be God. Whence also he turned himself to the devices of temptations, saying: If you are the Son of God, say that these stones become bread (Matt. 4:3). Since therefore he saw Him passible, he believed Him not to be born as God, but to be guarded by the grace of God. Whence now also he is reported to bring the charge:
