25. Liberalitas Job pauperibus dantis ad eorum votum. Qui extra metas inopiæ petunt, obtinere non merentur. — Per hæc dicta vir sanctus ostenditur, non solum ad inopiam pauperibus, sed etiam ad habendi desiderium deservisse. Sed quid si ipsa vellent 691 pauperea quæ fertasse aecipere non expediret? An quia in Seriptura sacra dici pauperes humiles solent, a ea sola æstimanda sunt quae accipere pauperes volunt, quæ humiles petunt? Et procul dubio oportet ut ineunetanter detur quidquid cum vera humilitate requiritur; id est, quod non ex desiderio, sed ex necessitate postulatur. Nam valde jam superbire est, extra metas inopiae aliquid desiderare. Unde et su perbe petentibus dicitur:
25. Job's liberality in giving to the poor according to their desire. Those who ask beyond the bounds of need do not deserve to obtain. — By these words the holy man is shown to have served not only the poor in their need, but also their desire of possessing. But what if the poor themselves should wish for those very things which perhaps it would not be expedient to receive? Or, because in Holy Scripture the humble are wont to be called 'poor,' are those things alone to be esteemed which the poor wish to receive, which the humble ask for? And without doubt it behoves that whatever is sought with true humility be given without hesitation; that is, what is asked not out of desire, but out of necessity. For it is already to swell greatly with pride, to desire something beyond the bounds of need. Whence also it is said to those who ask proudly:

Petitis et non accipitis, et quod male petatis (Jac. iv, 5). Quia ergo illi sunt veraciter pauperes, qui inflati per superbiæ spiritum non sunt, qwos aperte Veritas exprimit, cum dicit: Beati pauperes spiritu (Matth. v, 3); recte nunc per sanctum virum dicitur: Si negavi quod volebant paMperibus, quoniam qui ea volunt qux profecto liquet quod eis non expediunt, eo ipso quod superbiac abundant spirito, jam pauperes non sunt. Sed beatus Job dum pauperes humiles appellat, quidquid ab eo nccipere pauper voluit, non negavit, quia veraciter quisqne humilis b quod non potuit oportere, nec voluit. 26. Munificentia Job non solum ex munere, sed es dandi celeritate pensanda.
'You ask and receive not, because you ask amiss' (James 4:3). Because therefore they are truly poor who are not puffed up through the spirit of pride, whom Truth openly expresses when it says: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit' (Matt. 5:3); rightly is it now said through the holy man: 'If I have denied to the poor what they desired' — since they who desire those things which it is manifestly clear are not expedient for them, by that very fact, that they abound in the spirit of pride, are now no longer poor. But blessed Job, while he calls the poor humble, denied not whatever the poor man wished to receive from him; because whosoever is truly humble did not wish for that which he could not fittingly wish. 26. Job's munificence is to be weighed not only from the gift, but from the swiftness of giving.

- Sed cum largiiatem menlis suae indicat, quia ad votum se pauperibus concurrisse manifestat, neeesse est ut quæramus ne lumen misericordiæ dationis tarditate fuscaverit. Unde subjungil: e Et oculos vidua expecture feci. Petentem se viduam exspectare noluit, ut non solum ex munere, sed etiam ex celeritate muneris, bonomm operum merita augeret. Unde alias scriptum et: Ne dicas amico tuo, vade et revertere, cras dabo tibi, cum statim possis dare (Prov. III, 28 ). Sed nonnulli sotent exterius multa latgiri, communis autem vitæ gratiam repellentes habere pauperes socios tn domestica conversatione refugiunt.
— But since he indicates the bountifulness of his mind, in that he makes manifest that he hastened to the poor according to their desire, it is necessary that we inquire lest he darkened the light of mercy by slowness of giving. Whence he adds: 'And I made the eyes of the widow to wait for nothing.' He would not have the pleading widow wait, that he might increase the merits of good works not only from the gift, but also from the swiftness of the gift. Whence it is elsewhere written: 'Say not to thy friend, Go and return, tomorrow I will give thee, when thou canst give at once' (Prov. 3:28). But some are wont to bestow much outwardly, yet, spurning the grace of a common life, they shun to have the poor as companions in domestic converse.

Unde beatus Job, ut non solum se insinuet exterius mulia præbuisse, sed apud se quosque inopes etiam in domestica conversatione recepisse, protinus adjungit:
Whence blessed Job, that he might make known not only that he outwardly bestowed many things, but that he also received certain needy ones even into domestic converse with himself, straightway adds:
