564:1
V ers. 22. — Attamen caro ejus, dum vivit, dolabit, et anima ejus super semetipso lugebit. 27.
Verse 22. — Nevertheless his flesh, while he lives, shall have pain, and his soul over himself shall mourn. 27. Those who delight in the pleasures of the flesh experience greater tribulations from the flesh. — Concerning married persons Paul says: Such shall have tribulation of the flesh (1 Corinthians vii, 28). But tribulation of the flesh here even those can suffer who already live spiritually. Why then is tribulation of the flesh said, as it were specially, to be in married persons, which is not far even from the life of the spiritual, except that those more frequently receive greater tribulations from the flesh who delight in the pleasures of the flesh? But it is well said:
564:2
Et anima ejus super semetipso lugebit, quia quisquis gaudere in se appetit, eo ipso jam in luctu est quo a vera laetitia recessit. Vera quippe laetitia mentis creator est Dignum itaque est ut in se semper homo moerores inveniat, qui, derelicto creatore, in se gaudium quaerebat. Sequitur.
And his soul over himself shall mourn, because whoever desires to rejoice in himself, by that very thing is already in mourning, in that he has withdrawn from true gladness. For the Creator is the true gladness of the mind. It is fitting, therefore, that man should ever find sorrows in himself, who, having forsaken the Creator, sought joy in himself. There follows:
