V ers. 21. — Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meoe: nudus revertar illac. 85. Qui se a virtutibus nudum pulat, ipsa melius humilitate vestitur. —Ac si tentatus animus et f in infirmitatis suae inopia deprehensus dicat: Nudum me in fide prima gratia genuit, nudum eadem gratia in assumptione a salvabit. Est namque magnum ani- mi turbati solatium, ut pulsatus vitiis, cum se quasi nudari virtutibus conspicit, ad solam misericordiae spem recurrat; et eo se nudari non sinat, quo se a virtutibus humiliter nudum putat: qui etsi fortasse aliqua virtute in tentatione detegitur, infirmitatem tamen propriam agnoscens, ipsa melius humilitate vestitur;
Verse 21. — Naked came I out of my mother's womb: naked shall I return thither. 85. He who reckons himself naked of virtues is the better clothed with humility itself. — As if the tempted soul, caught in the poverty of its own weakness, should say: Naked did grace beget me in the first faith, naked shall the same grace save me at the assumption. For it is a great solace to the troubled soul, that, assailed by vices, when it beholds itself as it were stripped of virtues, it should have recourse to the sole hope of mercy; and it does not suffer itself to be stripped, in that it humbly reckons itself naked of virtues: for even if perchance it is stripped of some virtue in temptation, yet, acknowledging its own weakness, it is the better clothed with that very humility;
第二十一節。——我赤身出於母胎，也必赤身歸回那裡。八十五、那自認在美德上赤身的人，反倒更好地被謙卑本身所遮蓋。——彷彿那受試探的靈魂，被捉住在自身軟弱的貧乏中，便說：恩典在起初的信德中把我赤身生下，這同一恩典也必在被接去時把我赤身拯救。因為對受攪擾的靈魂而言，這是極大的安慰：它被惡習攻擊、看見自己彷彿被剝去美德時，便投奔於憐憫這唯一的盼望；它既謙卑地自認在美德上赤身，就不容自己被剝奪：因為即使它或許在試探中被剝去某種美德，卻因承認自己的軟弱，反倒更好地被那謙卑所遮蓋；

et valde robustius quam steterat jacet, cum sibi sine divino adjutorio cessat tribuere quod habet. Unde et manum mox largitoris et judicis humiliter agnoscit, dicens:
and it lies far more robustly than it had stood, when it ceases to ascribe to itself, without divine aid, what it has. Whence also it presently humbly acknowledges the hand of the Bestower and Judge, saying.
當它不再把所擁有的歸於自己、而歸於神的幫助時，它躺臥反比它站立時更為剛強。因此它隨即謙卑地承認那位賞賜者與審判者的手，說。
