VERS. 12, 13. — Sed, ut video, non esi qvi ar guere possit iob, et respondere ex vobis sermonibus ejus. Ne forte dicatis: Invenimus sapientiam, Deus projecit eum, non homo. 15. Deus in hac vita solatia aliquando concedit, nullo vitœ æternae detrimento. — Saepe hæretici per hoc quod esse et hominibus despicabiles solent, cum a cunctis fere gentibus sanctam Ecclesiam venerari conspiciunt, opinionem ejus quibus valent obtrectationibus lacerare contendunt, dicentes: Idcirco illi cuncta temporalia suppetunt, quia ei præmia aeternorum munerum subtrahuntur. Quorum vocibus Eliu obviat, dicens: N'e forte dicatis: Invenimus sapientiam, Deus projecit eum non homo.
VERSES 12, 13. — But, as I see, there is none who can convince Job, or answer his words from among you. Lest you should say: We have found wisdom; God has cast him down, not man. 15. God sometimes grants consolations in this life, with no detriment to eternal life. — Often the heretics, because they are wont to be despicable even to men, when they behold the holy Church revered by almost all nations, strive to tear apart her reputation with whatever detractions they can, saying: For this reason all temporal things are supplied to her in abundance, because the rewards of eternal gifts are withdrawn from her. Against whose voices Elihu goes, saying: Lest you should say: We have found wisdom; God has cast him down, not man.

Ac si arrogantes intra sanctam Ecclesiam sed tamen fideles contra haereticos dicant: Per hoc quod sanctam Ecclesiam in honore hominum florere temporaliter cernitis, projectam eam a Domino non credatis. Scit enim Redemptor ejus, et in hoc itinere solatia venienti tribuere, et pervenienti ad aeternam patriam superna praemia reservare. Incassum igitur dicitis quia Deus eam et non homo projecerit, cum venerari iliam a cunctis fere hominibus videtis v quia sic ei terrenae gloriie adjumentum tribuitur, ut per hoc multiplicius etiam ad coelestia subvehatur. Sequitur: VERS. i4. — Nihil locutus est mihi, et ego non secundum vestros sermones respondebo illi. i6.
As if the arrogant within the holy Church, but nevertheless faithful, should say against the heretics: Because you perceive that the holy Church flourishes temporally in the honour of men, do not believe her to be cast down by the Lord. For her Redeemer knows both how to bestow consolations upon her as she journeys on this road, and to reserve heavenly rewards for her when she arrives at the eternal fatherland. In vain therefore do you say that God, and not man, has cast her down, when you see her revered by almost all men; for the help of earthly glory is bestowed on her in such a way that through it she is all the more manifoldly borne upward toward heavenly things. There follows: VERSE 14. — He has spoken nothing to me, and I will not answer him according to your words. 16.

Superbi, cum corripiuntur, non audiunt, aut dissimulant. — Quid est, quod ait: Nihil locutus est mihi ? Nunquid sancta Ecclesia per prædicatores justos cum intra se arrogantes conspicit, erudire ac redarguere prætermittit ?Exercet hæc, et quotidie e"ercere non cessat. Sed Eliu, qui loquentem pu. blice beatum Job audierat, dicat: Nihil lOcutus eat mihi, quia nimirum omnes arrogantes voces quidem sanctae Ecclesiæ audiunt, sed sibi eas dici dissimulant, quando elationis vitium emendare contemnunt. Nec se de superbia redargui aestimant, quia esse se humiles putant, qui etiam redargui despiciunt, dum sapientiores se et ipsis redarguentibus arbitrantur. Quod vero an:
The proud, when they are corrected, do not listen, or pretend not to. — What is it that he says: He has spoken nothing to me? Does the holy Church, through her just preachers, when she beholds the arrogant within herself, neglect to instruct and refute them? She exercises this, and does not cease to exercise it daily. But let Elihu, who had heard blessed Job speaking publicly, say: He has spoken nothing to me, because indeed all the arrogant do hear the voices of the holy Church, but pretend that these are not said to them, whenever they scorn to amend the vice of elation. Nor do they think themselves rebuked for pride, because they suppose themselves humble, they who even scorn to be rebuked, while they judge themselves wiser than those very ones who rebuke them. But as to what follows:

Et ego non secundum sermones vestros respondebo illi, bene beato Job non secundum sermones eorum respondere se dicit. Arrogantes enim intra sanctam Ecclesiam positi respondent contra eam, sed non sicut haeretici exterius constituti. Neque enim contradicunt ei prava prædicando, sed perverse vivendo, quia nee de Deo, ul hæretici indigna sentiunt, sed de se plus quam necesse est, digna suspicantur. Sequitur: VERS. 15. — Extimuerunt, nec responderunt ultra, abstuleruntque a te eloquium. [Vet. IX.] Bene ad Eliu verba amici Job extimuisse referuntur, quia nonnunquam arrogantes Ecclesiae defensores, quamvis ordinem dicendi non teneant, tamen adversarios ipia dictorum virtute perturbant. Sequitur:
And I will not answer him according to your words, he well says that he does not answer blessed Job according to their words. For the arrogant placed within the holy Church answer against her, but not as heretics established outside. For they do not contradict her by preaching perverse things, but by living perversely, because they do not, like heretics, think unworthy things concerning God, but suppose worthy things concerning themselves more than is necessary. There follows: VERSE 15. — They were afraid, they answered no more, they took speech away from themselves. Well are the words 'was afraid' referred to Elihu's friend Job, because sometimes the arrogant defenders of the Church, although they do not keep the order of speaking, nevertheless disturb their adversaries by the very force of their words. There follows:
