V ers. 16. — In profundissimum infernum descendent omnia mea. 53. Qui profundissimus infernus, dicantur eorum receptacula. — Cum constet, quod apud inferos justi non in locis poenalibus, sed in superiori quietis sinu, tenerentur, magna nobis oboritur quaestio, quidnam sit quod beatus Job asserit, dicens: In profundissi- mum infernum descendent omnia mea. Qui et si ante advenium mediatoris Dei et hominum in infernum des- censurus erat, liquet tamen quia in profundissimum infernum descensurus non erat. An ipsa superiora i loca inferi profundissimum infernum vocat? Quia vi- delicet, quantum ad sublimitatem coeli, jam hujus aeris spatium non immerito dici infernus potest.

Verse 16.—'All that is mine shall descend into the deepest hell.' 53. What the deepest hell is, and what the receptacles of these are called.—Since it is established that among the lower regions the just were held not in penal places, but in a higher bosom of rest, a great question arises for us: what is it that blessed Job asserts, saying: 'All that is mine shall descend into the deepest hell.' For even if, before the advent of the Mediator of God and men, he was to descend into hell, it is nevertheless clear that he was not to descend into the deepest hell. Or does he call those very higher places of the lower region the deepest hell? Because, namely, as regards the sublimity of heaven, the space of this air can not undeservedly be called hell.

Unde cum apostatae angeli a coelestibus sedibus j in hoc caliginoso aere sint demersi, Petrus apostolus dicit: Angelis peccantibus non pepercit, sed rudentibus inferni detractos, in tartarum tradidit in judicio cru- ciandos reservari ( II Petr. ii, 1). Si itaque, quantum ad celsitudinem coeli, aer iste caliginosus infernus est, quantum ad ejusdem aeris altitudinem, terra quae inferius jacet, et infernus intelligi et profundus po- test;

Whence, since the apostate angels are plunged down from the heavenly seats into this dark air, Peter the apostle says: 'He spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, dragged down by the ropes of hell to Tartarus, to be reserved unto judgment to be tormented' (2 Pet. ii. 4). If therefore, as regards the height of heaven, this dark air is hell, then as regards the height of that same air, the earth which lies beneath can be understood both as hell and as deep.

quantum vero ad ejusdem terrae altitudinem, et illa loca inferi quae superiora sunt aliis receptaculis inferni, hoc loco non incongrue inferni profundis- simi appellatione signantur, quia quod aer ad coe- lum, terra ad aerem, hoc ille est superior inferno- rum sinus ad terram. [ Vet. XXIII.] 436 54. Job solam animam totum hominem esse sentit. — Sed mirum valde est quod adjungit: Descendent omnia mea. Cum enim sola anima descensura esset ad inferni loca, quid est quod sanctus vir illuc perhibet omnia sua descen- dere, nisi quod ibi se esse totum vidit, ubi pondus suae remunerationis intelligit?

But as regards the height of that same earth, those places also of the lower region which are higher than the other receptacles of hell are in this place not incongruously signified by the appellation of the deepest hell, because what the air is to heaven, and the earth to the air, that the higher bosom of the lower regions is to the earth. 54. Job perceives that the soul alone is the whole man.—But it is very wondrous that he adds: 'All that is mine shall descend.' For since the soul alone was to descend to the places of hell, what is it that the holy man declares all that is his to descend thither, save that he saw himself to be wholly there, where he understood the weight of his own recompense to be?

Quia hoc quod ex se insensibile in terra deserit, quousque ad incorrup- tionem resurrectionis redeat, se esse non sentit. Om- nia itaque sua in infernum profundissimum descen- sura perhibet, quo solam suam animam desce(??)- ram videt, quia ibi totus est, ubi sentire possit quod receperit. Vel certe in infernum omnia ejus descen- dunt, quia laborum omnium retributio adhuc in sola inferni quiete recipi praestolabatur. Et quasi illuc descendit omne quod egit, quia ibi quietem retribu- tionis suae ex omnibus invenit. Unde etiam ipsa quies praestolata subjungitur, cum illico subinfertur:

Because that which of itself, being insensible, he leaves in the earth, until it return to the incorruption of the resurrection, he does not perceive to be himself. And so he declares all that is his to be about to descend into the deepest hell, whither he sees his soul alone to descend, because there he is wholly, where he can feel what he shall have received. Or certainly all that is his descends into hell, because the recompense of all his labours was still awaited to be received in the rest of hell alone. And, as it were, thither descended all that he did, because there he found the rest of his recompense out of all his works. Whence also that very awaited rest is subjoined, when it is at once added:
