V ers. 19. — Memoria e vestra comparabitur cineri. 42. Superborum memoria cineri a vento rapto com- paratur, et luto. — Omnes qui cogitatione terrena huic saeculo conformantur per omne quod agunt huic mundo rel(??)nquere sui memoriam conantur. Alii bel(??) lorum titulis, alii altis aedificiorum moenibus, alii di- sertis doctrinarum saecularium libris instanter ela- borant, sibique memoriae nomen aedificant. Sed cum ipsa ad finem celerius vita percurrat, quid in ea fixum stabit, quando et ipsa celeriter mobilis pertransit(??) Aura etenim cinerem rapit, sicut scriptum est: Non sic impii, non sic, sed tanquam pulvis, quem projicis ventus a facie terrae ( Psal. i, 4).
Verse 12: 'Your memory shall be likened to ashes.' 42. The memory of the proud is likened to ashes snatched away by the wind, and to mire. — All who by earthly thought are conformed to this world strive, through everything they do, to leave behind for this world the memory of themselves. Some by the titles of wars, some by the lofty walls of buildings, some by learned books of secular teachings, labour intently, and build for themselves a name of memory. But since life itself runs the more swiftly to its end, what in it shall stand fixed, when even it, swiftly moving, passes away? For the breeze snatches away ashes, as it is written: 'Not so the ungodly, not so, but like the dust which the wind casts forth from the face of the earth' (Ps. 1:4).
第十二節：「你們的名聲必如灰燼。」四十二、驕傲人的名聲好比被風捲去的灰燼，又如淤泥。——凡以屬地心思效法今世的人，都藉他們所行的一切，竭力要為這世界留下自己的名聲。有的靠戰功的頭銜，有的靠高聳的樓牆，有的靠世俗學問的博學書卷，殷勤勞碌，為自己建立可紀念的名。但既然生命本身更快地奔向終局，那麼當它自己也迅速移動、匆匆過去時，其中有什麼能屹立不搖呢？因為微風捲去灰燼，如經上所記：「惡人並不是這樣，乃像糠秕，被風吹散於地面」（詩一4）。

Recte ergo stultorum memoria cineri comparatur, f quia illic ponitur, ubi ab aura rapiatur. Quantumlibet etenim quisque pro perficienda gloria sui nominis elaboret, memoriam suam quasi cinerem posuit, quia hanc citius ventus mortalitatis rapit. Quo contra de justo scriptum est: In memoria aeterna erit justus ( Psal. cxi, 4). Eo ipso enim, quo facta sua solius Dei oculis imprimit, no* men suae memoriae in aeternitate figit. Sequitur:
Rightly therefore is the memory of fools likened to ashes, because it is placed there where it may be snatched away by the breeze. For however much anyone labours for the perfecting of the glory of his own name, he has placed his memory as it were like ashes, because the wind of mortality snatches this away the more quickly. Against which, concerning the just it is written: 'The just shall be in everlasting remembrance' (Ps. 112:6). For by this very thing, that he imprints his deeds upon the eyes of God alone, he fixes the name of his memory in eternity. There follows:
