V ers. 20.— Et cum habuerit quae concupierat, pos- sidere non poterit. 24. Majoris iroe signum est, cum hoc tribuitur quod male desideratur. — Majoris quippe iracundiae est cum hoc tribuitur quod male desideratur, atque inde re- pentina ultio sequitur, quia hoc quoque obtinuit quod Deo irascente concupivit. Unde et per Psalmi- stam dicitur, cum e escam carnis male populus desi- derasse perhibetur: Adhuc esca eorum erat in ore ipsorum, et ira Dei ascendit super eos, et occidit plu- rimos eorum ( Psal. lxxvii, 31). Solent namque tar- dius apparere divina judicia, cum praepediuntur, ne impleri 479 debeant mala vota.
Verse 20.—And when he shall have possessed the things he coveted, he shall not be able to keep them. 24. It is a sign of greater wrath when that is granted which is wickedly desired.—For it belongs to a greater anger when that is granted which is wickedly desired, and from thence sudden retribution follows, because he has obtained the very thing he coveted while God was angry. Whence it is also said through the Psalmist, when the people is reported to have wickedly desired the food of flesh: «As yet their meat was in their mouth, and the wrath of God came upon them, and slew the most of them» (Ps. 77:31). For the divine judgments are wont to appear more slowly when they are held back, that evil wishes may not be fulfilled.
第二十節——當他佔有了他所貪求之物時，卻不能保有它。二四、當所惡欲之物被賜下時，乃是更大憤怒的記號。——因為當所惡欲之物被賜下時，正屬於更大的忿怒，且由此突然的報應隨之而來，因為他在天主發怒之際竟得著了他所貪求之物。因此，藉詩人也如此說——當百姓被記述為惡欲肉食之時：「肉在他們口中尚未嚼爛，天主的怒氣就向他們上騰，殺了他們中許多人」（詩七十七31）。因為天主的審判往往較遲顯現，正是當它被攔阻，使惡願不得成就之時。

Unde ergo hypocrita festine multiplicatur ut potens sit, inde agitur cum celeri- tate ne sit, quia et arbusta quae tardius crescunt g annosa perdurant; et quae in temporis brevitate pro- ficiunt celerius arescunt, et quasi cum festinant esse h tendunt ad non esse. For the more speedily an evil wish is permitted to be fulfilled, for the most part the more swiftly it is punished. Whence therefore the hypocrite is quickly multiplied that he may be mighty, from thence it comes to pass with speed that he should be no more; for the shrubs also that grow more slowly endure many years, while those that thrive in a short span of time wither the more quickly, and as it were, while they hasten to be, they tend toward not being. It follows:
因為惡願越是迅速被容許成就，多半也就越快受懲罰。因此，偽善者若迅速增多以求強盛，便正由此而急速歸於烏有；正如那些生長較慢的樹木得以長存多年，而那些在短時間內茂盛的卻更快枯萎，彷彿它們在急於存在之時，反倒趨向不存在。下文接著說：
