60. In the morning they trample me down like mire, and like glowing ash and cinders. — In the judgement of the reprobate, indeed, the holy Church of the elect is compared to mire, because, trampled down for a time, she is despised. She is likened to glowing ash and cinders, because, while they do not see her inward goods, they suppose that she has come only to those evils which they behold displayed in her bodily. But the faithful people of the elect, when they behold many falling away from among themselves, desire — if they could but obtain it — that the seasons of their adversity might be changed.
