Cap. xii, vers. 2. — 359 Ergo vos estis soli ho- mines, et vobiscum a morietur sapientia. 44. Superbe sapientis fatuitas. — Quisquis se praeire omnes ratione existimat, quid iste aliud quam solum se esse hominem exsultat? Et saepe contingit ut cum per tumorem mens in altum ducitur, in despectum omnium et sui admirationem sublevetur. In cogita- tione etenim proprii favores oriuntur, sibique de singularitate sapientiae b blanditur ipsa fatuitas. Pen- sat ea quae audierit, ac verba quae profert; et miratur sua, ridet aliena. Qui ergo solum se sapere aestimat, quid aliud quam hanc eamdem secum c mori sapien- tiam putat?
Chap. xii, ver. 2. — So then you alone are men, and with you wisdom shall die. 44. The folly of one proudly wise. — Whosoever esteems that he surpasses all in reason, what else does this man exult in but that he alone is a man? And it often happens that when the mind is led on high through swelling, it is raised into contempt of all and admiration of itself. For in the thought self-favors arise, and folly itself flatters him concerning the singularity of wisdom. He weighs the things he has heard, and the words which he utters; and he admires his own, laughs at others'. He, therefore, who esteems that he alone is wise, what else does he think but that this same wisdom dies with him?
第十二章第二節——「你們果然是有智慧的人哪，智慧要與你們同死。」四十四、驕傲自智者的愚妄。——凡自以為在理性上勝過眾人的，這人所誇耀的，豈非唯獨自己是人麼？並且常有這樣的事：當心靈因膨脹而被引向高處時，它便被高舉至藐視眾人、驚羨自己的地步。因為在思念中，自我的稱許興起，愚妄本身便以智慧的獨一無二奉承他。他衡量所聽見的事，並所發出的言語；驚羨自己的，譏笑別人的。所以那自以為唯獨自己有智慧的人，所想的豈非唯獨這智慧與他同死麼？

d Nam quam adesse aliis abnuit, soli sibi hanc tribuens, profecto intra tempora suae brevitatis claudit. Pensandum vero est vir sanctus quanta discretione utitur, ut amicorum superbientium arro- gantia comprimatur, cum protinus adjungit:
For that which he denies to be present in others, ascribing it to himself alone, he assuredly shuts up within the span of his own brevity. But it must be weighed with what great discretion the holy man uses, that the arrogance of his proud friends may be repressed, when he at once adds:
