1170:1
VERSe 11. — Frumentum desiderat nubes. 54.
VERSE 11. — 'The grain desireth the clouds.' 54. The elect are the grain, for which the rain of the divine Word is necessary. — For what else are all the elect, but the grains of God, to be stored up in the heavenly barns? Which now in the threshing of the floor endure the chaff, because in this purging of holy Church they bear the contrary ways of the reprobate, until the inward husbandman separate them with the winnowing-fan of judgment, and, receiving His elect into the supernal dwellings as grains now clean, deliver the chaff to the eternal fires. Whence it is well said through John: 'Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse His floor, and gather the wheat into His barn, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire' (Matt.
1170:2
III, 12).Sed hoc frumentum quousque ad perfectionem fructum veniat, nubium pluvias eispectat ut crescat, quia bonorum mena prædicantium verbis infunditur, ne ab humore charitatis desideriorum carnalium sole siccetur. Hoc frumentum supernus agricola in mundo surgere ac nubes desi derare conspexerat, cum dicebat: Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci. Rogate autem Dominum messis, ut mittat operano, ill messem suam (Jlalth. IX, 37). Qui igitur hic frumentum, illic messis, qui vero hic nubes, illic operarii vocantur, quia praed!catores sancti et nubes sunt, et operarii; nubes videlicet per doctrinam, operarii per vitam;
III, 12). But this grain, until it comes to the perfection of its fruit, awaits the rains of the clouds that it may grow, because the mind of the good is watered by the words of preachers, lest it be dried up by the sun of carnal desires away from the moisture of charity. This grain the supernal husbandman had beheld rising up in the world and desiring the clouds, when He said: 'The harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He send laborers into His harvest' (Matt. IX, 37-38). Those, therefore, who are here the grain are there the harvest; and those who are here the clouds are there the laborers, because the holy preachers are both clouds and laborers: clouds, namely, through doctrine; laborers, through life;
但這五穀,直到它結出完全的果實之前,要等候雲彩的雨好使它生長,因為善人的心思是藉宣講者的話語得澆灌,免得它被肉體私慾的日頭曬乾,離了仁愛的滋潤。這五穀,那屬天的農夫曾看見它在世上興起、渴慕雲彩,就是當祂說:「要收的莊稼多,做工的人少。所以你們當求莊稼的主,打發工人出去收祂的莊稼」(馬太福音九章37-38節)。所以那些在此為五穀的,在彼便是莊稼;那些在此為雲彩的,在彼便是工人,因為聖潔的宣講者既是雲彩,又是工人:作雲彩,是藉教義;作工人,是藉生活;

clouds, because they flow forth in words; laborers, because they cease not to do what they speak. Whence it is also added:
