Quot vitiis sibi succedentibus premitur pecca- tor, tot malignis spiritibus euntibus ac redeuntibus devastatur. - Qui hoc loco horribiles, nisi maligni spiritus appellantur, bonis videlicet mentibus pa- vendi atque fuglendi? Et quia iidem maligni spiritus certis quibusque vitiis singuli obsequi sunt credendi, cum perversus iste alia quidem vitia ad momentum deserere videtur, sed alia agere incipit, super hunc profecto horribiles vadunt et veniunt, quia perversi mentem, etsi alia mala deserunt, alia occupant. Saepe namque videas iniquum in terrena potestate constitutum, gravi furore commoveri, quidquid ira suggesserit exsequi;
Ibid.—Terrible ones shall go and come upon him. 33. By as many vices as succeed one another to press the sinner, by so many malignant spirits going and returning is he laid waste.—Who in this place are called «terrible ones» but the malignant spirits, to be dreaded namely and fled by good minds? And because these same malignant spirits are to be believed each severally to attend upon certain particular vices, when this perverse man seems for a moment to forsake indeed some vices, but begins to practise others, upon him assuredly the terrible ones go and come, because they occupy the mind of the perverse with other evils, even if they forsake some. For often you may see a wicked man, set in earthly power, moved by grievous fury, carry out whatever anger has suggested;

et cum furor abscesserit, mox 482 ejus mentem luxuria devastat; cum luxuria ad tempus intermittitur, elatio protinus quasi de conti- nentia in ejus cogitatione subrogatur, atque ut a cae- teris timeatur, appetit videri terribilis. Sed cum res exigit f ut loqui quid dupliciter debeat, quasi post- posito terrore superbise, remissa locutione blanditur; et cum superbus videri desierit·, duplex eflici non pertimescit. In cujus ergo mentem vitia vitiis succe- dunt, recte de eo dicitur: Vadent, et venient super eum horribiles, quia quot vitiis g decedentibus et suc- cedentibus premitur, lot malignis spiritibus ejus animus quasi euntibus ac redeuntibus devastatur.
and when the fury has departed, forthwith lust lays waste his mind; when lust is for a time intermitted, pride is immediately, as it were out of continence, substituted in his thought, and that he may be feared by others, he longs to appear terrible. But when the matter requires that he should speak something double, then, as it were laying aside the terror of pride, with relaxed speech he flatters; and when he has ceased to appear proud, he fears not to become double. In whose mind therefore vices succeed to vices, it is rightly said of him: They shall go and come upon him, the terrible ones, because by as many vices departing and succeeding as he is pressed, by so many malignant spirits, as it were going and returning, is his soul laid waste.
及至暴怒退去，情慾隨即蹂躪他的心；情慾暫時止息，驕傲便立刻彷彿由節制而生，替入他的思念，且為叫別人懼怕，他渴望顯得可畏。但當事情需要他說某種兩面之言時，他便彷彿放下驕傲的可怖，以緩和的言語諂媚；當他不再顯出驕傲時，卻不怕變得兩面三刀。故那心中惡習接踵而至的人，論到他正說：可怖者要來往臨到他身上，因他被多少去而復來的惡習所壓，就被多少彷彿來往的惡靈蹂躪其心魂。
