V ers. 10. — Propterea circumdatus es laqueis, et conturbat te formido subita. 11. Adversa patienti, scelerum poenas esse exprobrant. — Illum formido subita conturbat, qui considerare negligit quid ex districtione judicis venientis immi- (??)eat. Quia ergo fidelem populum haeretici culpis perfidiae oppressum credunt, circumdatum laqueis accusant. Et quia existimant quod futura non prae- videat, in percussione sua hunc subita formidine conturbatum putant. Qui adhuc insultantes adjun- gunt: V ers. 11. — Et putabas te tenebras non visurum, et impetu aquarum inundantium non oppressum iri. Ac si aperte dicat:
(Verse 10) — Therefore you are surrounded with snares, and sudden terror troubles you. 11. To one suffering adversity they reproach the penalties of crimes. — Sudden terror troubles him who neglects to consider what threatens from the strictness of the coming Judge. Since, then, the heretics believe the faithful people to be oppressed by the guilt of faithlessness, they accuse them of being surrounded with snares. And because they suppose that they do not foresee the future, they think this people troubled with sudden terror in their affliction. And still insulting they add: (Verse 11) — And you thought you would not see darkness, and would not be overwhelmed by the rush of overflowing waters. As if he were to say openly:

Securitatem pacis in spe tibi proposueras, et idcirco de praesumptione tua quasi de luce gaudebas, nec te unquam opprimi tribulationibus existimasti. Sed ecce, dum supervenientibus malis affligeris, an sint recta quae tenes ipsae quae te oppri- munt tribulationum tenebrae ostendunt. Quas vide- licet tribulationes Eliphaz aquis inundantibus com- parat, quia dum aliae super alias irruunt, quasi aquis tumentibus undae undas sequuntur. Sequitur:
You had set before yourself in hope the security of peace, and therefore you rejoiced over your presumption as though over light, nor did you ever suppose you would be crushed by tribulations. But behold, while you are afflicted by evils coming upon you, whether the things you hold are right, the very darkness of tribulations that oppress you shows. And these tribulations Eliphaz compares to overflowing waters, because, while some rush upon others, waves follow waves as though of swelling waters. There follows:
你曾以盼望在心中預設了平安的穩妥，因此你為自己的自恃歡喜，彷彿為光歡喜，也從未料想自己會被患難壓倒。但看哪，當你被臨到的災禍所苦時，你所持守的是否正直，那壓迫你的患難黑暗本身就顯明出來。以利法把這些患難比作泛濫的大水，因為當一波湧上另一波時，浪隨著浪，彷彿翻騰的水。接著說：
