Sancti quos admonendo corrigere non possunt, patiendo tolerant. — Esse hoc perversorum proprium solet, quod sua mala per convicium bonis ingerant, priusquam de eis ipsi veraciter accusentur; et dum metuunt increpari de his quae faciunt, adver- santes suis pravitatibus justos haec facere testantur. Sancti autem viri patienter audiunt etiam quae se nunquam fecisse meminerunt, quamvis ea mala quae sibi ingeri conspiciunt ab ipsis suis criminatoribus no- verint perpetrata; et cum eos praedicando corrigere non possunt, patiendo tolerant, quatenus si fructum conversionis eorum a non valent, ex ipsis tamen prae- mium longanimi atis acquirant.
1. The saints endure by patience those whom they cannot correct by admonition. — It is commonly the mark of the perverse that they hurl their own evils as reproaches against the good before they themselves are truly accused of them; and while they dread being rebuked for the things they do, they testify that the just, being opposed to their depravities, are the ones who do these things. But holy men patiently listen even to charges of deeds they never remember having committed, although they know that the very evils they perceive to be cast at them were perpetrated by these very accusers; and when they cannot correct such men by preaching, they bear with them by patience, so that, if they cannot gain the fruit of their conversion, they may nevertheless acquire from them the reward of long-suffering.
一、聖徒以忍耐擔待那些無法藉勸誡改正之人。——邪惡之人慣有一種特性：他們趕在自己真正被指控之前，先以辱罵把自己的惡加諸善人身上；當他們懼怕因所行之事受責備時，便作證說是那些反對其邪惡的義人做了這些事。然而聖潔之人卻忍耐地聆聽，甚至聆聽他們自知從未做過之事的指控，雖然他們明知那些加諸己身的惡，正是這些控告者自己所犯的；當他們無法藉宣講改正這等人時，便以忍耐擔待，如此，縱使得不到他們悔改的果子，至少能從他們身上獲得長久忍耐的賞賜。

Unde et sancta Ec- clesia David prophetae vocibus dicit: Supra dorsum meum fabricaverunt peccatores ( Psal. cxxviii, 3), quia videlicet dum haereticos vel quoslibet reprobos, quos corrigere non valet, tolerat, facta peccantium supra dorsum portat. Beatus itaque Job videns Eli- phaz amicum suum multa contra se de hypocrisi con- querentem, qui ex consolationis verbis ad amaritu- dinem increpationis eruperat, et simulatus consolator apparebat, per patientiam suam typum servat Eccle- siae, quae novit talia audiendo tolerare, et, cum ejus sermo admittitur, ratiocinando destruere, et dicit:
Hence also holy Church says, in the words of the prophet David: The sinners built upon my back (Ps. 128:3); for indeed, while she tolerates the heretics or any of the reprobate whom she cannot correct, she bears the deeds of the sinful upon her back. And so blessed Job, seeing his friend Eliphaz make many complaints against him about hypocrisy — one who had burst forth from words of consolation into the bitterness of rebuke, and appeared as a feigned comforter — preserves by his patience the type of the Church, which knows how to bear such things by listening, and, when its speech is admitted, to destroy them by reasoning; and he says:
