G. Judcei ab lateritio opere prius liberati, dum ter rena sapiunt, iterum ad lateres redierunt. — Quid aliud Dominus plebem Israeliticam nisi lutum repe, rit, quam obsequiis gentilium deditam in Ægypto servientem lateribus invenit? Quam dum tot miraculis ad terram repromissionis duxit (Exod. v, seq.), dum perductam cognitionis suae scientia implevit, dum tot arcana secretorum ei per prophetiam contulit; quid eam aliud quam servandi mysterii signaculum fecit ? b Ipsa quippe divina prophetia clausum continuit quidquid de se Veritas 921 in Iine revelavit.

6. The Jews, first freed from the labour of brick-making, while they savour of earthly things, returned again to the bricks.—What else did the Lord find the people of Israel to be but clay, whom He found in Egypt, given over to the service of the Gentiles, labouring at the bricks? And when by so many miracles He led them to the land of promise (Exod. 5ff.), when having led them He filled them with the knowledge of Himself, when He bestowed on them through prophecy so many secrets of hidden things—what else did He make of them but a seal of the mystery to be kept? For the divine prophecy itself held enclosed whatever Truth revealed of itself at the end.

六、猶太人起初從製磚的勞苦中得了釋放，卻因貪戀屬地之事，再度回到磚窯。——主所發現以色列百姓，除了泥土之外還能是什麼呢？祂在埃及發現他們，被交付去服事外邦人，在磚窯裡勞苦。當祂藉著這許多神蹟領他們往應許之地（出五及下），當祂領了他們、以認識自己的知識充滿他們，當祂藉預言將許多隱祕之事的奧祕賜給他們——祂使他們成了什麼，若非那要被保守之奧祕的印記呢？因為神聖的預言本身包藏了真理在末後所要顯明關於自己的一切。

Sed dum post tot divina secreta, post lot percepta miracula in Redemptoris sui adventu, plus terrain quam veritatem dilexit, per sacerdotes dicens: Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et ve nient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum et gentem I (Joan. XI, 48), quasi ad eos quos in Ægypto reliqueret lateres redit; et quae facta jam Dei signaculum fuerat, ad hoe se iterum quod deseruerat inflexit; lutumque se post signaculum in oculis veritatis exhibuit, cum per impietatis malitiam accepti verbi mysteria perdidit, et sola terrena sapere quae inquinant elegit. 7. Soli litterœ servientes Deo per charitatem adhlerere noluerunt. — Ubi apte subjungitur: Et stabit sicut vestimentum.

But when, after so many divine secrets, after so many miracles received, at the coming of its Redeemer it loved the earth more than the truth, saying through its priests: 'If we let Him alone thus, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away our place and nation' (John 11:48), it returned, as it were, to the bricks which it had left behind in Egypt; and that which had already become the seal of God bent itself back again to that which it had forsaken; and it showed itself to be clay after the seal, in the eyes of the truth, when through the malice of impiety it lost the mysteries of the word it had received, and chose to savour only earthly things which defile. 7. Those serving the letter alone refused to cleave to God through charity.—Where it is aptly subjoined: 'And it shall stand as a garment.'

Impolita namque et grossiora vestimenta etiam cum induta fuerint, quia induentis membris bene applicata non inhaerent, stare feruntur. Judaea igitur circa veritatis notitiam etiam cum servire videretur, sicut vestimentum stetit, quia per extenora mandata servire se Domino ostendit, sed adhærere ei c per charitatis intelligentiam noluit. d Dum, solam in praeceptis Dei litteram tenuit, et nequaquam se per spiritum sensibus intimis junxit, quasi ei qui se induerat non adhaesit. Ubi et apte subjungitur:

For unpolished and coarser garments, even when they have been put on, because being ill-fitted to the limbs of the wearer they do not cling to them, are said to stand. Judaea therefore, regarding the knowledge of the truth, even when it seemed to serve, stood as a garment, because through outward commandments it showed itself to serve the Lord, but refused to cleave to Him through the understanding of charity. While it held to the letter alone in the commandments of God, and by no means joined itself to Him through the spirit in its inmost senses, it did not cling, as it were, to Him who had clothed Himself with it. Where also it is aptly subjoined:
