Ibid. — Let not God regard it from above, and let Him not illumine it with light. 8. Why human nature was repaired, and not the angelic. — Almighty God, as He was able to make good things out of nothing, so, when He willed, through the mystery of His incarnation He repaired even good things that had been lost. And He had made two creatures for the understanding of Himself, namely the angelic and the human: but pride smote both, and broke them from the state of their inborn rectitude. But one had the covering of flesh, while the other bore nothing weak of flesh. For an angel is spirit only, but man is both spirit and flesh. The Creator therefore, having pity that He might redeem, ought to lead back to Himself that one which, in the perpetration of guilt, is agreed to have had somewhat of weakness;

and He ought so much the more loftily to repel the apostate angel, in that, when he fell from the fortitude of persevering, he bore nothing weak of flesh. Whence rightly the Psalmist, when he said that the Redeemer had pity on men, also expressed the very cause of the mercy, saying: 'And He remembered that they are flesh' (Ps. 78:39). As if he said: In that He saw their weak things, He willed not strictly to punish their faults. There is still another reason why fallen man ought to be repaired, and the proud spirit cannot be repaired, because, namely, the angel fell by his own malice, but man was cast down by another's.

Since, therefore, the human race is brought back to the light of repentance by the coming of the Redeemer, whereas the apostate angel is called back to the light of restoration by no hope of pardon and by no amendment of conversion, it is rightly said: 'Let not God seek him from above, nor let Him illumine him with light.' As if it were plainly said: Since he himself brought in darkness, let him endure without end what he made; nor let him ever recover the light of his former state, since he lost even this when unpersuaded.
