V ers. 12. — De civitatibus fecerunt viros gemere. 68. Haeretici Ecclesiae unitatem solvere nituntur.— Quia civitates a conviventibus populis appellantur, non immerito civitatum nomine verae sunt fidei Eccle- (??)iae designatae, quae in singulis mundi partibus positae unam catholicam faciunt, in qua fideles omnes de Deo recta sentientes concorditer vivunt. [ Vet. XXVI.] Hanc namque in Evangelio Dominus d conviventium populorum etiam per locorum distinctionem concor- diam designavit, cum satiaturus de quinque panibus populum, quinquagenos per turmas, vel centenos dis- cumbere praecepit, ut videlicet turba fidelium escam suam e et locis disjuncta et moribus conjuncta perci- peret.

Verse 12. — Out of the cities they made men to groan. 68. Heretics strive to dissolve the unity of the Church. — Since cities are named from the peoples living together, not undeservedly are the churches of true faith designated by the name of cities, which, set in the several parts of the world, make one catholic Church, in which all the faithful, thinking rightly concerning God, live in concord. This concord of peoples living together the Lord in the Gospel designated even through the distinction of places, when, about to satisfy the people from five loaves, he commanded them to recline by companies of fifty, or of a hundred, so that, namely, the throng of the faithful might receive its food both separated by places and joined by morals.

Jubilaei quippe requies quinquagenarii numeri mysterio continetur, et quinquagenarius bis ducitur, ut ad centenarium perducatur. Quia ergo prius a malo quescitur opere, ut post anima plenius quiescat in cogitatione, alii quinquageni, alii autem centeni discumbunt, quoniam sunt nonnulli qui jam a pravis actibus habent requiem operis, et sunt nonnulli qui a perversis cogitationibus habent jam requiem mentis. Heretici igitur, quia, perversis saepe hujus mundi po- tentibus adhaerentes, bonorum socialem vitam atque concordiam persequuntur, recte nunc dicitur: De ci- vitatibus fecerunt viros gemere.

For the rest of the Jubilee is contained in the mystery of the number fifty, and fifty is taken twice, that it may be brought to a hundred. Since, therefore, first one rests from evil work, that afterward the soul may more fully rest in thought, some recline by fifties, others by hundreds; for there are some who already have rest of work from wicked deeds, and there are some who already have rest of mind from perverse thoughts. The heretics, therefore, since, cleaving often to the perverse powerful of this world, they persecute the social life and concord of the good, it is rightly now said: Out of the cities they made men to groan.

Quos recte beatus Job memorat viros, quia illos magis haeretici exstinguere ambiunt qui perfectis gressibus per viam Dei non fluxe et ene viter, sedjviriliter currunt. Qui cum vulnus per- fidiae ingeri in parvulorum fidelium mente conspi- ciunt, 527 semper ad clamorem et gemitus redeunt. Unde et recte dicitur:

Whom blessed Job rightly calls 'men,' because the heretics all the more strive to extinguish those who run along the way of God with perfect steps, not loosely and effeminately, but in manly fashion. When these behold the wound of perfidy being inflicted upon the mind of the little ones of the faithful, they ever return to crying out and to groans. Whence it is also rightly said:
