276:1
I bid. Et ipsum rapiet armatus. 11. Diabolus saepe scientiam permittit, ut corrumpat vitam. —Antiquus namque hostis quasi inermis a vin- citur, cum mala aperte suggerens humanae menti, bona omnia simul destruere conatur. Sed armatus venit, quando bona alia intacta deserens, latenter alia corrumpit. Nam saepe quosdam in intellectu non tentat, eisque in sacri eloquii meditatione non obviat; sed tamen eorum vitam in operatione supplantat, qui dum de scientiae virtute laudantur, nequaquam suorum operum damna respiciunt; cumque in favoris b delectationem animus ducitur, vitae suae vulneribus non medetur.
Same verse. 'And the armed man shall snatch him away.' 11. The devil often permits knowledge, in order to corrupt the life. For the ancient enemy is as it were unarmed when he is overcome, when, openly suggesting evils to the human mind, he attempts to destroy all good things at once. But he comes armed, when, leaving other good things untouched, he secretly corrupts others. For often he does not tempt certain men in the understanding, nor stand against them in the meditation of the sacred oracle; but yet he supplants their life in action, who, while they are praised for the virtue of knowledge, in no way regard the losses of their own works; and while the mind is led into the delight of favor, it does not heal the wounds of its own life.
276:2
Hunc ergo armatus hostis rapuit, quem fraude tectus in alia deserens, ex alia parte supera- vit. Sequitur:
This man, therefore, the armed enemy snatched away, whom, cloaked in fraud, leaving him in one part, he overcame from another part. There follows:
