V ers. 15. — Quis est Omnipotens, ut serviamus ei? 52. Carnales, aut Deum non esse suspicantur, aut ei servire contemnunt.—Mens enim hominis male ex- terius fusa, sic in rebus corporeis sparsa est, ut ne- que ad semetipsam intus redeat, neque eum qui est invisibilis cogitare sufficiat. Unde carnales viri jussa spiritalia contemnentes, Deum quia corporaliter non vident, quandoque ad hoc perveniunt, ut etiam non esse suspicentur. Unde scriptum est: Dixit insipiens in corde suo: Non est Deus (Psal. xiii, 1). Unde nunc quoque dicitur: Quis est Omnipotens, ut serviamus ei? Plerumque enim plus appetunt homines servire hominibus, quos corporaliter vident, quam servire Deo, quem non vident.
Verse 15. — 'Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him?' 52. The carnal either suspect that God does not exist, or disdain to serve Him. — For the mind of man, being wickedly poured out abroad, is so scattered among corporeal things that it neither returns inwardly to itself, nor suffices to conceive of Him who is invisible. Whence carnal men, disdaining spiritual commands, since they do not see God corporeally, sometimes come to this, that they even suspect Him not to exist. Whence it is written: 'The fool has said in his heart: There is no God' (Psalm 13:1). Whence now also it is said: 'Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him?' For very often men crave more to serve men, whom they see corporeally, than to serve God, whom they do not see.

Per omne enim quod faciunt, ad finem oculorum tendunt; et quia in Deum oculos corporis tendere non possunt, ei obsequia praebere vel despiciunt, vel si coeperint, fatigantur. Esse enim, sicut dictum est, non credunt, quem corporaliter non intuentur. Qui si auctorem omnium Deum hu- militer quaererent, a id quod non videtur, ei rei quae videtur, b esse melius, in semetipsis invenirent. Ipsi quippe ex anima invisibili et corpore visibili subsi- stunt; sed si hoc ab eis quod non videtur, abstrahi- tur, illico corruit quod videtur. Et patent quidem carnis oculi; sed videre quidquam vel sentire non possunt. Sensus enim visionis periit, quia habitator recessit;
For through everything they do, they aim at the end of their eyes; and because they cannot direct their bodily eyes toward God, they either despise offering Him their services, or, if they have begun, they grow weary. For they do not believe Him to exist, as has been said, whom they do not corporeally behold. Yet if they humbly sought God the author of all, they would find in themselves that what is not seen is better than the thing which is seen. For they themselves subsist of an invisible soul and a visible body; but if that which is not seen be taken away from them, at once that which is seen falls to ruin. And the eyes of the flesh indeed lie open; but they can neither see nor feel anything. For the sense of sight has perished, because the inhabitant has withdrawn;

et domus carnis remanet vacua, quia abs- cessit ille invisibilis spiritus, qui per ejus respicere fenestras solebat. Quia ergo rebus visibilibus invisi- bilia praestantiora sunt, carnales quique ex semetipsis pensare debuerunt, atque per hanc, ut ita dixerim, scalam considerationis tendere in Deum: quia eo est, quo invisibilis permanet, et eo summus perma- net quo comprehendi nequaquam potest. Sunt vero nonnulli qui Deum et esse et incomprehensibilem esse non ambigunt; qui tamen ab eo non ipsum, sed dona exteriora quaerunt. Quae cum ei servientibus deesse conspiciunt, ipsi servire contemnunt. De quo- rum adhuc verbis adjungitur:
and the house of the flesh remains empty, because that invisible spirit has departed, which was wont to look out through its windows. Because therefore invisible things are more excellent than visible, all carnal men ought to have weighed the matter from their own selves, and by this ladder, so to speak, of consideration to ascend toward God: for He is by that whereby He remains invisible, and He remains supreme by that whereby He can by no means be comprehended. But there are some who do not doubt that God both exists and is incomprehensible; who nevertheless seek from Him not Himself, but outward gifts. And when they see these to be lacking to those who serve Him, they themselves disdain to serve. Concerning whose words it is still added:
