983:1
65. Super ventum sedet, qui transitoriis successibus lætatur. Adversitas non dejicit, quem prosperitas non corrumpit. — Quia praesentis vitae gloria quasi in alto cernitur, sed nulla stabilitate solidalur, velut elevatus super ventum ponitur, qui prosperitate transitoria lactatur, a quoniam ad hoc solum hunc fugitivæ felicitatis aura sublevat, ut repente deterius in infimis sternat. Quia enim sancta Ecclesia cunctis in honore est, infirmi quique in ea qui transitoriis b successionibus lætantur, quo nisi super ventum positi videntur elevati?
65. He sits upon the wind who rejoices in transitory successes. Adversity does not cast down him whom prosperity does not corrupt. — Because the glory of the present life is beheld as it were on high, but is made firm by no stability, he who is gladdened by transitory prosperity is set as one lifted up upon the wind — since the breeze of fleeting felicity raises him for this end alone, that suddenly it may lay him lower among the lowest. For because holy Church is in honour with all men, those weak ones within her who are gladdened by transitory successes — as what else are they seen but lifted up, set upon the wind?
983:2
quia subsequente persecuLionis tempore, dum prosperitatis aura pertransit, eorum protinus elevatio corruit, et repente cadentes discunt, quia elevati prius e in ventum sederunt.
For, in the following time of persecution, while the breeze of prosperity passes by, their exaltation forthwith collapses, and, falling suddenly, they learn that, being first exalted, they had sat upon the wind. These words indeed agree in a special way also with the person of the holy man — not as regards that which he was, but that which he seemed to be. For fleeting prosperity had not lifted up his mind, which amid so great an affluence of things he ever pressed down with a wondrous weight of virtue; but according to that which could appear outwardly, he who was humble in his own eyes, but exalted in the eyes of others, was, as one set upon the wind, dashed down mightily — because, propped up by outward things, he seemed to have fallen from that whence he was thought to rise.
983:3
Sequitur:
This fall, indeed, the holy man did not suffer in his mind, because no adversity casts down him whom no prosperity corrupts. For he who cleaves to truth in no way succumbs to vanity, because while with the strong foot of thought he fixes his intention within, everything that is transacted mutably without in no way reaches the citadel of the mind. There follows:
