166:1
V ers. 10. 59. Sancti ferientibus opponunt scutum patientioe, male suadentibus jacula intorquent doctrinoe. — Sancti viri tribulationum bello deprehensi, cum uno eodem- que tempore alios ferientes, alios suadentes ferunt, illis opponunt scutum patientiae, istis intorquent ja- cula doctrinae; atque ad utrumque pugnandi modum mira virtutis arte se erigunt; quatenus et perversa imus sapienter doceant, et foras fortiter adversa contemnant; hos docentes corrigant, illos tolerantes premant.
Verse 10. — Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things at the hand of the Lord, why should we not endure the evil? The saints oppose the shield of patience to those who strike them, and hurl the javelins of doctrine at those who counsel evil. — Holy men, caught in the war of tribulations, when at one and the same time they endure some striking them and others counseling them, oppose to the former the shield of patience, and hurl at the latter the javelins of doctrine; and to each mode of fighting they rouse themselves with wondrous skill of virtue, so that they may both wisely teach the perverse within, and bravely despise adversities without; correcting these by teaching, pressing back those by bearing with them.
166:2
Insurgentes namque hostes patiendo despi- ciunt, infirmantes vero cives compatiendo ad salu- tem reducunt: illis resistunt, ne et alios subtrahant; c istis metuunt, ne vitam rectitudinis funditus per- dant. [ Rec. XII.] 40. Id exemplo sancti Pauli comproba- tor. — Videamus castrorum Dei militem contra utraque praeliantem. Ait: Foris pugnoe, intus timores.
For they despise by suffering the enemies that rise up, but they bring back to salvation by compassion the fellow citizens who grow weak: they resist the former, lest they draw away others also; they fear for the latter, lest they utterly lose the life of uprightness. This is proved by the example of St. Paul. — Let us behold the soldier of God's camp battling against both. He says: Without were fightings, within were fears. He enumerates the wars which he endures from without, saying: In perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren (2 Cor. vii, 5; xi, 26). But in this war, what darts he hurls against the adversary, let him add:
166:3
In labore et aerumna, in vigiliis multis, in fame et siti, in jejuniis multis, in frigore et nuditate. ( Ibidem. ) Sed in- ter tot certamina deprehensus dicat, quanto vigilia- rum munimine etiam castra custodiat. Nam protinus adjungit: Praeter illa quae extrinsecus sunt, instantia mea quotidiana, sollicitudo omnium Ecclesiarum. Ecce in se bella fortiter suscipit, et tuendis se proximis misericorditer impendit. Narrat mala quae patitur, subjungit bona quae impartitur. Pensemus ergo cujus laboris sit, uno eodemque tempore foris adversa tolerare, intus infirma protegere. Foris pugnas pati- tur, quia 90 verberibus scinditur, catenis ligatur;
In labour and toil, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness (in the same place). But amid so many contests, when caught in them, let him say with how great a garrison of vigils he even keeps guard over the camp. For he presently adds: Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. Behold, he bravely takes upon himself wars for himself, and mercifully spends himself in protecting his neighbours. He recounts the evils which he suffers, he subjoins the goods which he imparts. Let us therefore weigh of what labour it is, at one and the same time to endure adversities without and to protect the weak within. Without he suffers fightings, because he is torn by scourgings, bound with chains;
在勞碌、辛苦、多次不得睡、又飢又渴、多次不得食、受寒冷、赤身露體(同處)。但在如此眾多的爭戰中,當他被困其間時,且讓他說出他以何等守望的防衛保守營寨。因為他隨即補充說:除了這些外面的事,還有為眾教會掛心的事,天天壓在我身上。看哪,他既剛強地為自己擔起戰爭,又慈憐地為保護鄰舍而耗盡自己。他敘述所受的患難,又補述所施的好處。因此讓我們衡量,在同一時刻既在外承受逆境、又在內保護軟弱者,是何等的勞苦。他在外承受爭戰,因為他被鞭傷撕裂、被鎖鏈捆綁;
166:4
intus metum tolerat, quia passionem suam non sibi, sed discipulis obesse formidat. Unde et eisdem scri- bit, dicens: Nemo moveatur in tribulationibus istis. Ipsi enim scitis, quod in hoc positi sumus ( I Thess. iii, 3). Aliorum quippe casus in propria passione metuebat, ne dum ipsum discipuli afflictum pro fide verberibus agnoscerent, fideles se profiteri recusa- rent. O immensae charitatis viscera; despicit quod ipse patitur, et curat ne quid pravae persuasionis discipuli in corde patiantur. In se contemnit vulnera corporis, et in aliis vulnera medetur cordis. Habent quippe hoc justi proprium, ut in dolore positi tribu- lationis suae, curam non deserant utilitatis alienae;
within he endures fear, because he dreads lest his Passion be a hindrance not to himself but to his disciples. Whence he also writes to them, saying: That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto (1 Thess. iii, 3). For he feared the falls of others in his own suffering, lest, while the disciples recognized him afflicted with scourgings for the faith, they should refuse to profess themselves faithful. O bowels of immense charity! He despises what he himself suffers, and takes care lest the disciples suffer anything of perverse persuasion in their heart. In himself he scorns the wounds of the body, and in others he heals the wounds of the heart. For the just have this as their own, that, placed in the pain of their own tribulation, they do not abandon their care for the profit of others;
他在內承受懼怕,因為他懼怕自己的受難不是使自己、乃是使門徒受阻。故此他也寫信給他們說:免得有人被這些患難搖動;因為你們自己知道,我們受患難原是命定的(帖撒羅尼迦前書三章3節)。因為他在自己的受苦中懼怕別人跌倒,惟恐門徒認出他為信仰受鞭打的患難時,竟不肯承認自己是信徒。哦,何等宏大的愛心腸腹!他藐視自己所受的苦,卻謹慎免得門徒心中受任何乖僻勸誘的損害。他在自己身上輕看身體的創傷,卻在別人身上醫治心靈的創傷。因為義人有這特點:他們雖處在自己患難的痛苦中,卻不撇棄對他人益處的關懷;
166:5
et cum de se adversa patientes dolent, aliis necessa- ria docentes praevident, et quasi percussi quidam magni medici aegrotant. Ipsi tolerant scissuras vul- neris, et aliis proferunt medicamenta sanitatis. Valde autem minoris laboris est, aut docere cum nihil to- leras; aut tolerare, cum nihil doces. Unde sancti viri ad utraque se solerter extendunt; et cum tribu- lationibus fortasse feriuntur, sic exteriora bella sus- cipiunt, ut sollicite cogitent, ne proximorum interiora lacerentur. Sic sancti viri fortes in acie assistunt; et illinc jaculis adversantia pectora feriunt, hinc scuto postpositos debiles tuentur, atque ita utrobique ve- locitate circumspectionis invigilant;
and while they grieve, suffering adversities in themselves, they foresee for others the necessary things by teaching, and, as it were struck, they lie sick like great physicians. They themselves endure the rents of a wound, and to others they offer the medicaments of health. But it is of far less labour either to teach when you endure nothing, or to endure when you teach nothing. Whence holy men skilfully stretch themselves toward both; and when perhaps they are struck by tribulations, they so take up the outward wars that they solicitously consider lest the inward parts of their neighbours be torn. Thus holy men stand strong in the battle line; and on the one side they strike the opposing breasts with javelins, on the other with the shield they protect the weak set behind them, and thus on both sides they keep vigil with the swiftness of circumspection;
當他們在自己身上承受逆境而哀傷時,卻藉教導為別人預備所需之物,並且彷彿被擊打者,像大醫生一樣臥病。他們自己承受創傷的裂口,卻向別人施予健康的藥品。但無所承受而教導,或無所教導而承受,其勞苦都遠為輕省。故此聖潔之人熟練地向兩者伸展自己;當他們或許被患難擊打時,就如此擔起外面的戰爭,以致殷勤思量免得鄰舍的內裡被撕裂。這樣,聖潔之人在陣中站立剛強;一面用標槍擊打敵對的胸膛,一面用盾牌保護置於其後的軟弱者,如此兩面都以警醒的敏捷守望;
166:6
so as both to pierce through the bold before them, and to defend the trembling behind them from the wound. Since therefore holy men so know how to endure adversities without, that within they also know how to correct perverse things, let it be rightly said: Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. For because it is said to the elect: Do manfully, and let your heart be strengthened (Psalm xxx, 25), the minds of the carnal, who serve God with a wavering intention, are not undeservedly called women. Tending toward eternal goods, he does not take temporal evils ill. — If we have received good things at the hand of the Lord, why should we not endure the evil? As if he said: If we tend toward eternal goods, what wonder if we suffer temporal evils?
166:7
Haec autem bona sollicite Paulus in- spexerat, quando illata aequanimiter mala tolerabat, dicens: Non sunt condignoe passiones hujus tem- poris ad superventuram gloriam, quae revelabitur in nobis ( Rom. viii, 18). I bid.— In omnibus his non peccavit Job labiis suis.
But Paul had solicitously looked into these good things, when he bore with equanimity the evils inflicted upon him, saying: The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall come, which shall be revealed in us (Rom. viii, 18). In the same place. — In all this did not Job sin with his lips. He is contumelious neither against God nor against his adversaries. — Holy men, when they suffer persecution both without and within, not only do they in no way transgress in the injuries done to God, but neither do they hurl contumelious words against their very adversaries. This the leader of the good, Peter, rightly admonishes, saying: Let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a reviler (1 Peter iv, 15).
166:8
For he suffers as a reviler who, in the time of his suffering, is unbridled in injury to his persecutor for his own salvation. But because the body of the Redeemer, namely holy Church, so bears the weight of griefs that it does not by its words pass beyond the measure of humility, it is rightly said of this grieving one:
