V ers. 20.— Cunctis diebus suis impius superbit. 42. Electi in humiliate, reprobi in superbia vitam finiunt.—Solent diam electi in quibusdam suis e co- gitationibus atque actibus superbire. Sed quia electi sunt, cunctis diebus suis superbire non possunt, quia priusquam vitam finiant, ad humilitatis metum ab elatione corda commutant. Impius vero diebus suis omnibus superbit, quia sic vitam terminat, ut ab elatione minime recedat. Circumspicit quod tem- poraliter floret, et pensare negligit quo in aeternum ducitur. In vita carnis fiduciam ponit, eaque diu permanere existimat quae ad praesens tenet. Solidatur in elatione animus, in despectum adducit(??)r omnis propinquus;
Verse 20: 'All his days the impious man is proud.' 42. The elect end life in humility, the reprobate in pride. — Even the elect are wont in certain of their thoughts and acts to be proud. But because they are elect, they cannot be proud all their days, because before they end their life, they change their hearts from exaltation to the fear of humility. But the impious man is proud all his days, because he so ends his life that he in no way departs from exaltation. He looks around at what flourishes temporally, and neglects to consider whither he is led for eternity. He puts his trust in the life of the flesh, and reckons that those things will long remain which he holds for the present. His mind is made solid in exaltation, every neighbour is brought into contempt;
第二十節：「不敬虔的人終其一生都驕傲。」42. 選民以謙卑、被棄者以驕傲結束一生。——就連選民在自己某些思念與行為上也慣於驕傲。但因為他們是選民，就不能終生驕傲，因為在他們結束生命之前，會把心從自高轉向謙卑的敬畏。然而不敬虔的人卻終生驕傲，因為他如此了結一生，以致絕不離開自高。他四顧那暫時興盛之物，卻疏於思想自己被引往何等永恆的境地。他倚靠肉體的生命，認為他目前所握有的必長久存留。他的心在自高中變得剛硬，一切鄰舍都被他藐視；

quam repentina mors subrepat nunquam considerat; quam sit ejus incerta felicitas nunquam pensat. Qui si incertitudinem fugacis vitae conspiceret, incerta-pro certo nequaquam teneret. Unde et bene subditur:
he never considers how suddenly death may steal upon him; he never weighs how uncertain his felicity is. For if he beheld the uncertainty of fleeting life, he would by no means hold the uncertain for the certain. Whence also it is well subjoined:
