V ers. 20.— Videbunt oculi ejus interfectionem suam, et de furore Omnipotentis bibet. 59. Post casum inutiliter aperiuntur oculi. — Qui si in hac vita positus, culpam suam videre voluisset, de Omnipotentis postmodum furore non biberet. Sed qui hic avertit oculos a respectu, criminis, illic decli- nare non valet sententiam damnationis. Saepe vero hi qui supplicia aeterna non metuunt, prava agere pro temporali saltem 493 percussione pertimescunt. Sed sunt nonnulli qui.ita in iniquitate duruerunt, ut nee in ipsis metuant feriri quae amant, dummodo quae perverse cogitaverint expleant. Unde hoc in loco de iniqui obduratione subjungitur:
Verse 20. — 'His eyes shall see his own slaughter, and he shall drink of the fury of the Almighty.' After the fall the eyes are opened uselessly. — For if, while placed in this life, he had been willing to see his own guilt, he would not afterward drink of the fury of the Almighty. But he who here turns his eyes away from regarding his crime, there is not able to escape the sentence of damnation. Yet often those who do not dread eternal torments are nonetheless terrified into avoiding evil deeds, at least by temporal chastisement. But there are some who have so hardened in iniquity that they do not even fear to be struck in the very things they love, provided they may accomplish what they have perversely purposed. Whence in this place it is added concerning the hardening of the wicked man:
